heard this a few times on the radio in boston months ago. they played it so much i thought it was some well-loved local, homegrown irish/celtic punk outfit doing something more traditional-sounding, a la dropkick murphys. never caught the name of the song or band. never thought to seek them out. and i only just started watching anything other than supernatural on tv, so. i loved it instantly. how could i not? that melody. that accent. that phrasing. those jangly guitars and banjos. catchy song is catchy.
i didn't realize they were laura marling's backing band. shows how much attention i pay. i like laura marling quite a bit.
those of us who love language notice fresh use. i did a double take here:
Now learn from your mother or else spend your days biting your own neck.
Way to extend a metaphor! That's some imagery fo yo ASS!
(i'm not in love. it's just a simple phase i'm going through...)
....
the gay in me loves music that is purposefully melodramatic and overwrought, full of emotion, sincere. turns my crank. always and forever. it's why i can't get behind too much indie. can only take it in small doses. too much practiced disinterest, careful derision.
