wow - that was really insightful, really...quentencial...makes me understand a little more. really, its all kinda sad, isn't it?
you know, I've never thought about this before, and don't know if anyone has thought about it. but he really strikes me as super gay here, in an old fashioned way. Maybe he never wanted to be a "man" I wonder if a sexual identity crisis could be an issue in his life too
Yes, maybe he was gay, and never came out of the closet because of his religious upbringing and his father, who vehemently disapproved of homosexuality. But maybe he was bisexual, of two spirits, genderqueer, or even asexual. I think he immersed himself in his work, what was most important to him, and that he had huge trust and intimacy issues, with good reason, so he just didn't bother getting entangled romantically. Maybe he was one of those people whose natural resting state is single. Maybe he had a secret sex life. Whatever he was, he was undoubtedly queer. Who knows, and what does it matter really?
I read somewhere in the past few days since I've been delving into his life that he was once frustrated and dismayed that women who expressed interest in him romantically seemed to want to save him from his loneliness. He observed that they wanted to do so in a way that shared in his loneliness. I thought that spoke volumes. He probably never found someone with whom he fit and felt safe.
