A funny thing happened on the way to the Dickens dinner...

We knew a snowstorm was coming, but it wasn't supposed to hit until late morning. Since I had to be in Kentucky tonight for the Dickens dinner play I was in, we decided to leave plenty early and try to beat the storm. We left about 9:30 and the first few flakes were coming down. By 9:45, the roads were slick, but I figured we'd take it slow and we'd be fine once we hit the interstate. I think we would have made it, too, but for the other drivers.

On a slick 2 lane highway, an SUV came straight at us in our lane and clearly already out of control. He looked like he was headed for the ditch on our side of the road, so I aimed for the ditch on his side of the road (no cars behind him, so it was safe). Since the road was icy, I had to quickly ease over to avoid losing control. For a split second I thought I'd managed to avoid him, and then WHUMP! the front of his vehicle connected with my van right near the rear right tire. I was going slow enough at this point that maintaining control was easy, and I pulled off the road.

After taking a second to catch my breath, I checked the rearview mirror and saw the SUV in the ditch a ways behind us, and another car in the ditch across the road with half its front end crumpled in. I got out and went to see if everyone was okay (they were) and found that the police were already on the way.

Spent about an hour standing in the road talking to the emergency people and filling out paperwork. One of the firemen has a horse he wants to sell; Jessie and her mom might end up buying it. The guy in the SUV admitted fault, and my van was still drivable (I even got it back on the road without towing).

Jessie and her mom spent a lot of their time this week constructing and tailoring for me some nice Dickensian clothing. They busted their butts to get it ready by today, and now I don't need it since I'm not going. But despite the nice duds, I felt I didn't look right for the character I was portraying. You may recall that a few days ago I got my hair cut (not just for this...I wanted to do it anyway), but I still thought I looked too old. So last night I shaved. Entirely. I haven't had a bare chin in years. Since you won't get to see it otherwise, I present to you my funny looking chin.

No beard! eek!

You'll never see this again. Me with no chin hair. Dec 2007.

I hope the play goes well without me.
