i realize i've been awfully fangirly with Wild Adapter lately, and i've failed to make a proper coherent post to introduce this series.
since Wild Adapter doesn't get enough love, i'm just gonna give it lots and lots of love XD i guess it's a little overshadowed by Minekura's other excellent series, Saiyuki.
i'm really jealous impressed that she manages to write 2 excellent series at the same time (though Saiyuki is monthly and WA is bimonthly) and without a boring moment in either.
so without much further ado, here's some background on Wild Adapter.
The Plot: the story is set in Yokohama, Japan. Yokohama is the 2nd largest city in Japan, and it's really close to Tokyo, about 30km (19 miles) from downtown Tokyo? i don't remember exactly. it's also a port city.
the story takes place in 1997, though it starts in 1995. the first volume of the manga is actually a prologue where you're introduced to the protagonist, the setting and everything that's going on, and then the 2nd volume takes off a year after vol 1 ends.
it's a Yakuza world, and as such it has violence, drugs and sex. sex of the het kind, sorry XD;
Kubota Makoto is "invited" to join a Yakuza group called "Izumoukai" as their youth division leader. his new second-in-command, Komiya, is first wary of him, but soon becomes fascinated with him (it's sort of hinted he fell in love with him >_>;) and he is the teller of the first volume. Izumoukai has a rival, another Yakuza group that owns the other side of the city, and are called Toujo. a bit into the story we learn there's a new drug in the market. it's called "W.A" and the people that take this drug turn into animal-like monsters - with fur and claws and everything... but they die cause their internal organs explode. the police are investigating this (while keeping it a secret from the public), and now the two Yakuza groups are also interested in it, trying to find out the origin of this mysterious drug, because it's not originated in the yakuza groups who are the drug dealers of the city. also, they suppose that whoever gets to own this drug will have power over the country. so basically, everyone wants their hand on a lead to this drug.
into all this mess, arrives the second main character, Tokito, who will be the link to this drug. Tokito has no memories, and at the start of volume 1 we see him running away from pursuers in Tokyo, supposedly in May 1995. his right hand is covered with fur and has claws, which indicates he came into contact with WA. Kubota finds Tokito unconscious and injured in an alley and takes him into his home in early 1996, and from then on, the story takes 2 important layers:
the external one - the WA drug and everything it involves. every volume is a new story arc.
the internal one - Kubota and Tokito's relationship, and mostly how this relationship is changing Kubota.
The Characters:
Kubota Makoto:
one of the most fascinating characters i've come across in manga yet. it's hard to classify him into a group of stereotypical characters, though i think he's resembling the "niko-niko" group in many ways... except that he doesn't look feminine and maybe not as pleasant and inviting as the others.
he appears carefree and always smiling, looking like a normal, nice guy. he's awfully smart and cunning tho, and has no qualms when he kills ppl or beat them to near death >_>
he likes to play mah-jong and video games, but hates games that aren't against human opponents (he claims this is how he knows he's alive).
Kubota is not attached to anything, not even his own life... he has interest in nothing. not in women, not in men, not in humans... but he likes animals. he's pretty morbid too, there's a large monologue where he talks about a dead stray cat, and then he says he will probably die in that manner too - with his guts scattered. >_>;
he likes new things and stalks 7-11 to buy all the new merchandise, i guess it's because he's looking for something to become attached to. basically, Kubota is not really alive, he just lives on waiting for his death. of course, something happens in the end of volume 1 that triggers a change in him, and makes him quit the yakuza group. and then after he picks Tokito, he can't stay so aloof from the world anymore. Tokito completely changes him, making him alive, making him human.
Tokito Minoru:
Tokito escapes unidentified pursuers at the start of volume 1. it appears he's been running away for months, when Kubota picks him up from an alley at the end of volume 1. like i said, Tokito's right hand is covered with fur and clawed, looking like he's been infected with the WA drug, but it's obvious he didn't take the drug like the other ppl who turned completely into monsters and died. but Tokito has no memory of who he is and how his hand became that way, so he's now also searching for the origins of WA to find out his true identity. sometimes he has nightmares and/or flashbacks from his past, and it doesn't look like something he should remember... it makes him go insane, but then he doesn't remember anything of it when Kubota snaps him out of it.
Tokito is a cat. and i mean, a CAT. if cats could speak in a human language they'd sound like Tokito. he's a brat; arrogant, loud, brash. he doesn't ask for things, he demands them. he whines and grouches a lot (but in a cute way!!), and only gets along with Kubota (tho he doesn't come in contact with a lot of ppl ^^;). Kubota spoils him rotten, too. Tokito is also very territorial and his territory is of course Kubota, whom he refers to as "Kubo-chan", which leads to some nice jealousy scenes XD
Kubo-chan is of course totally owned, as any cat owner is a slave to their sweet darling XD
Their Relationship:
they are not an official couple. they don't kiss and they don't have sex. but their relationship is very loving and subtle. the emotions are clearly there. Tokito doesn't get along well with ppl, but he does what Kubo-chan tells him (even if he growls at him while doing so XD). and Kubota is totally taken with his cat and caters to any of his whims (really, like going to 7-11 in the middle of the night because Tokito wants a snack XD) . it's obvious how different Kubota has become when Tokito stops him from killing ppl, even if it's a villain. he's also completely different when interacting with Tokito, always playful and naughty. though he showed no interest whatsoever in sex before, he's totally ecchi with Tokito, just trying to get reactions from him. there's also something parental about him, since he's like the parent and Tokito is the kid, but isn't it often the case with lovers? ^__^
they're very fluffy and cuddly, they touch and hold hands, and after volume 4, i won't be surprised if their relationship finally takes the next step in the coming chapters, probably the next arc (the current arc which will be volume 5, is flashbacks from when Kubota picked Tokito). it's really nice to have angst, hurt/comfort and fluff all rolled into one *________*
Other Characters:
there's Kasai-san, he's Kubota's uncle and conveniently also a police detective in charge of the WA cases. though he's Kubota's official guardian (at the start of the story Kubota is 16 *lol* but now in vol 4 he's 19....) , he doesn't meddle with his way of life, and helps him out of trouble. he's a pretty cool guy Kasai. he's the other person Tokito gets somewhat along with ^^ Kasai has a young, rookie partner called Araki, he's cute and always gets sick at WA scenes >_>
Kou: before Kubota joined the yakuza, he used to work part-time for Kou who owns a store in chinatown that deals with "goods". (i think mostly weapon, the guns are referred to as "Wok"), after Kubota left the yakuza, he returned to doing deliveries for Kou... and he also hires Kou to look at Tokito, since Kou is an unlicensed doctor. from here on Kou is Kubota & Tokito's illegal source of information for WA. he's also an intriguing character in his own right.
Sanada: the daikou of Izumoukai. i guess that's the yakuza boss - but not the head of the yakuza family, i guess like an executive boss. he's a creepy man that has taken an interest and i suppose an obsession with Kubota. Izumoukai seem to be the last to know about the WA, but now they do, and its implied they know about Tokito being the link to WA too.
Sekiya: the daikou of Toujo. another creepy man.. and okama too. >_> he looks like Miki Shinichirou XD (and Miki voices him in the drama cds XDDDDDDDDD)
not much to say again, but he knows about WA already in vol 1, and he also knows about Tokito. after he hurt Tokito's neck, Kubota is probably looking to kill him XD but Tokito already stopped him from killing him once, too bad.
Kubota's Father: he hasn't shown up yet, but looks like he'll make an important character later on. we only know his name is Munakata Seiji and he's very powerful (my guess is that he's a politician..) he had a lover his family didn't accept. that lover was Kasai's big sister, and Kubota was born from this relationship, but he is not acknowledged by either of his parents and moved to live with Kasai. Sanada partially took Kubota into the group because he thinks Kubota resembles his father. (and the other part prolly cuz of his sick attraction -_-;)
Taki: Takizawa Ryouji. only shows up in vol 3, but also in vol 4. he seems like a good guy that will show up more from now on. used to be a reporter and now is a freelancer.
about the seiyuus:
i found it's pretty rare that i read a manga first and then watch the anime and like the casting, usually it doesn't match the voice i had in my mind as i read. but in this case, i just have to say the casting is perfect. Kubota is voiced by Morikawa Toshiyuki (morimori ♥) and while i was afraid he'll make him sound like Konrad, he totally surprised me. i cannot imagine anyone else doing Kubota's voice; carefree and lilting, he got him nailed. (Morikawa's other big roles are Konrad (KKM), Sephiroth (FFVII), Kimimaro (Naruto), Gou (Saint Beast), Homura (Saiyuki))
Tokito is voiced by Ishikawa Hideo ♥♥♥ Hideo is Itachi in Naruto, Tatsuha in Gravitation, Katou in Sotsugyou M, Kinta in Tantei Gakuen Q. i have to say Tokito is my fave role of him now *___* like morimori is perfect as Kubota, they really found a perfect Tokito. Hideo's whiny pitch is cute and doesn't get on your nerves like other whiny pitches (*grins at Chuck*), he can be serious and calm too when its required -- Tokito is a feisty cat XD
here's
a little clip from drama 2 (scene from vol 2)... they are such a tease. *sigh* (basically it's just Tokito losing to Kubo-chan in a a video game and tries to weasel out of doing the dishes)
and
another one: (also from vol2)
Tokito: ahh, damn. it's the worst.. Kubo-chan brings home a GIRL. the world is going to end tomorrow.
Kubota: what, are you angry?
Tokito: .....not really. give me coffee too. COFFEE!!
Kubota: ..hai, hai.
and one from vol 3: Kubota: ah, that reminds me- I've thought up a background for us so we don't seem suspicious
Tokitoh: Background?
Kubota: For why we're joining this religion, and also a reason why they should keep us together when we're going through training
Tokito: what is it?
Kubota: 'We're a gay couple-- and we're also incurable sex maniacs. 'we're also half brothers by different women, suffering the pangs of a forbidden love and torn apart by our family, who have eloped here together.' That's our background.
Tokito: ...na, uh.. ku...
Kubota: OK, repeat that for me.
Tokito: wh-wh-wh-what the hell is that?!! no way!!! absolutely no way!!!
Kubota: it can't be helped.. it's the only thing they'll understand.
Tokito: that's not the problem!!! and anyway, what does incurable sex maniacs got to do with it??!!
*happy sigh*
btw, Kou is voiced by Sekiiiiiiiiii (Seki Toshihiko ♥). and he's awesome... kinda sound like the voice he did for Count D in pet shop of horrors, but then again, Kou kinda resembles him too XDDD;
Shiritsu Araiso Koutou Gakkou Seitokai Shikkoubu
or in the english title, Araiso Private High School Student Council Executive Committee. (i just call it Araiso... or EC)
this is a high-school light comedy manga of two volumes which features Kubota and Tokito as partners in the justice league of their high school, where they get to beat the crap out of bullies in the school and get away with it XD;
though it was published before WA, Minekura wrote WA before and threw the characters into a lighter setting first, i don't know why. some say to get them a fanbase before introducing them in the bleak and violent world of WA. ^^;
they are quite different in Araiso.. Kubota is not morbid for one thing XD Tokito takes his arrogance to higher levels... he often refers to himself as "ore-sama". (he does it in WA too, but not as much)
they are even more slashy than in WA, jealous of each other and hugging alot, and all the girls in school fangirl over them. but their relationship is more gag-slash than deep and meaningful like in WA. it's still light fun though, to see them as high school students. (it's the ultimate AU HS fanfic XD)
