Something my Mother said the other day struck me, and I realized I had to share.
She recently gave me the book The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, recommending I read it, and letting me know I could borrow the sequel, as well, when I finish it.
I had no real idea what the book was about, going in (and I'm still not finished, only about half-way through), but she kept saying and you'll just LOVE the main character...the one the book is titled for (etc...) The comment that particularly sticks out in my head, however, is when she mentioned Oh, and the main guy, he's kind of a slut!
The more I read of the book, the more this comment surprises me. Not that I'm altogether okay with terming someone a "slut"...but that out of the characters in the book, he's the one she pinpoints. The main male character (of whom my Mother spoke) has slept with two women, at this point in the book, and the only one of any real note is his married lover, whose husband is agreeable to the affair. His past, as far as it has been explored, is rather unremarkable (divorced due to cheating on his wife with his married lover is the "sluttiest" thing I've seen so far). The main female character, however, up until this point, has slept with (or recalled sleeping with) numerous people, men and women, outside of any type of "normal" relationship, and is unapologetic about it.
And to reiterate, I'm generally not okay with calling anyone, male or female, a slut, but I was kind of proud of my Mom for taking the view she did, and not immediately making judgments / comments about the main female characters choices. Every once in a while, she really surprises me...and in the good way, too.
Oh, and by the by, I haven't finished the book yet, but I'd definitely recommend it - though I'd caution very strongly anyone triggered by rape, as there is rape involved, some of it brutal and heart-breaking - the book is, in large part, a statement about violence against women, including sexual assault.
