This is a tutorial for making comic-like pictures.
the original tutorial is by (
not_a_painter)
here but i edited it a bit so the effect is slightly different. that tutorial looks more "from the comic" but mine is well.. different.
so anyway. here it is! i'm too lazy to take screencaps so just read carefully (:
making this:

1. take your original picture, duplicate the layer, then hide the first one.
2. do whatever edits you want, bringing up contrast is good. On the duplicated layer, go to Filter>Artistic>Poster Edges. Just go with the default (Edge thickness +2 Edge intensity +1 Posterisation +2). You may want to add in some of your own black lines to complete the outline. either the pen tool or brush tool is good.
3. next, still on the duplicated layer, go to Image>Adjustments>Threshold. Put in 71, this can vary depending on your picture. neaten up the lines, erase all the dotty unwanted stuff.
4. select all the white parts. just select one part, right click, and click similar. all the white parts will be selected then press delete. it'll appear no different at first though.
5. make the original layer be seen. it looks okay but not cartoony, just with the outline. so go to Filter>Blur>Surface Blur and type in radius: 5 and threshold: 8. then it'll appear not veryvery different, so just press Ctrl F a couple of times till your satisfied with it.
6. you can stop there, or you could add in speech/thinking bubbles, captions and all that. for a speech bubble, use the eliptical marquee tool to draw a oval and colour it in white, then use the polygonal lasso tool to draw the pointy thing and also fill with white. next go to blending options and click stroke, give it size 2 or 3 px in black. For a thinking bubble, use your brush tool and just make a cloud shape using your brush tool with lots of smaller circles and colour in the inside. then use your brush 3 times in decreasing size for the three bubbles leading to the head. also give it a stroke. for captions its just a rectangle then go to Edit>Transform>Perspective and move the top little square to the right side. then give it a stroke. and of course type in your text. Gnatfont is a font that really looks like those used in comics.
you can resize it to become an icon:

hope you had fun!
