Bethany held out her hand to be helped up, but no one was there. She had forgotten that she told Don to leave. It didn't take much to get her mad these days, and Don was a quick learner. He learned that when she says leave, it's best to leave. He never went far, though. If she yelled for him, he would show up, but If she went looking for him, she wouldn't find him. He was good at disappearing.
A sharp pain shot down her left leg and she yelled out in pain. He showed up seconds later to hold her hand and rub the pain from her body. As soon as the pain had subsided, she gave him her customary apology that he got after every time she got mad. The words were worthless, and they both knew it, but they both continued through the motions anyway, every day. He was devoted to her, and she to him, despite everything they put each other through.
Soon, he hoped, her pain would go away forever and they could return to their normal lives, but for now, he did as she told him.
