Manifest: Guard Duty

"tet'Drakin!"

Tempyst opened her eyes. Captain of the Royal Guard, great.

"Just what were you doing, tet'Drakin?"

--I was taking a nap.-- "I was centering myself so I could keep a better eye on the Fourth Prince, Sir."

The Captain's orange eyes narrowed. "I'm certain you standing there with your eyes closed is helping protect the Fourth Prince, ~who is outside at the moment~!"

Tempyst faught the urge to growl at him and wipe the spittle from her face. "Of course, Sir. Sorry, Sir. Won't happen again, Sir."

"I should certainly hope not," he hissed under his faceplate. "You are lucky T'y'light clan and your Father are on good terms, otherwise you would have been executed for your incompetence," he stated, sending a fresh deluge of spit into Tempyst's face. "I trust you will be more watchful in the future?"

"Yes, Sir."

The Captain glared at her once more, then continued walking the corridor, inspecting the other Guards.

As soon as he was far enough off, Tempyst grabbed the back of her headwrap and wiped her face clean. --That faceplate of his needs to cover more than just from the cheekbones up.-- She flipped the cloth back and stared at her reflection in the wall mirror. Red-orange headwrap with a steel faceplate covering her forehead to her nose; the same red-orange undershirt with goldenrod embroidery covered with chainmail and a gold overvest. The leggings were the same red-orange as well as the boots. The Royal Guard's uniform was completed by steel greaves and gauntlets with elbow guards. The armorsmiths and tailors were not very fond of Tempyst and her habit of growing more than the male Guards every year. She had gone from 4'6" at age ten to 5'8" when she turned eighteen.

Tempyst shrugged. Being a Royal Guard wasn't all that bad--it was definately better than being a normal Warrior. Warriors were expendable. No one touched or even looked at a Warrior. Everyone else did something that furthered the deDannan way of life, Warriors just made sure that way of life didn't die.

The double doors opened, letting in the Princes and the Princess. Tempyst straightened to attention, as did all the Guards. The Royal Children entered their rooms, the Fourth Prince flashing Tempyst a smile as he walked in. Suddenly, the uniform wasn't the only thing that was making her warm.
