I finally started again

1k is nothing to sneeze at. The night is still young. Though I am having some trouble keeping nanowrimo.org alive long enough to update my wordcount. argh.

Oh, and Mitchell is now Chris. He was going to be Cody but he refused to keep that name for some reason. Stubborn character for being written as reserved and quiet as he is. I'll save Mitchell for another story.

Mara walked a couple of steps around the room to get her legs going again. She could see through the invisible wall front of the room, just like her own cell. All three guards were now posted in front of it spaced apart at equal distances. Mara snickered a bit. "I guess they figure we're more dangerous together," she gestured at the alien's backs.
Chris looked confused. "I guess, what's makes you say that?"
"Well, I only had two guards and us to together now have three."
"How can you tell? It's just us two in here."
Mara pointed a bit more directly at the guards behind the wall. "You can't see them?" Chris shook his head, eyeing her as if she might be the next to go crazy. "On the other side of the wall, there!" Mara walked up and thumped on the invisible wall hard, causing the guards to flinch for their guns for a second.
"Tell me you didn't see that."
Chris stepped forward and put a hand on each of Mara's shoulders. "You should lay down again, there's nothing there but another wall, just like the other three around us."
"Ahhh," Mara remembered what she'd gone through in her cell. "Ok, this is going to sound a bit strange, but we're already captured by aliens so I'll assume it can't get weirder than that." She ran a hand over the smooth gray white wall. "See, you can only see the wall if you think it's there. I found out I could see out the front of my cell if I convinced myself that the wall wasn't there."

It took some doing, but Chris finally understood what I was trying to say. And then it took a bit longer for him to practice convincing himself the wall wasn't there. I'm sure it must be harder to do so with someone else in the room, but he never complained. I think he was happy to finally have some company, as I was...

"Argh," James said from his reclined position on the bed.
"What?" Mark stopped reading as he heard the softball hit one of the ceiling boards with purposeful smack. "It's getting all boring and stuff, skip to something interesting. Skip to an alien part, I wanna hear more about them."
Mark flipped around, looking for a more interesting part. There was a couple of pages of notes on this new guy Christopher and his story from earth and some more notes on being stuck in the cell for hours. "Ah, here we go," Mark said, starting to read aloud again.

...door opened and we had to end our conversation. It was amazing how a quiet room could get even quieter when our captors came to see us. It seemed this time, they’d come for both of us...

They both looked up as the door opened and their conversation cut off right midsentence. There was two guards and the one white tuniced alien between them. Mara felt that scared feeling start to creep up her back again and looked away from the pearl white eyes staring at her. Chris unconsciously put an arm around her shoulders, knowing full well he couldn’t be any protection for her or himself. But Mara was glad for it anyway, it helped to steady her nerves as the three aliens advanced. Their hands were tied once again with the mysterious bands of light with their palms clasped together. But before they were to be led out of the cell, the middle alien ran a scanner over Mara. She remembered that scanner from before and kept still this time. Her strength had returned but she still felt like she wasn’t quite over a sickness that she couldn’t shake. Chris watched all through it with a worried look on his face.
The alien seemed satisfied enough with his readings, it was hard to tell. So far, there hadn’t been much facial expression to speak of in all their contact with this race. The two of them were stood up and walked out of the cell and into the corridor, side by side. Each had a guard escort. The handcuff bands were remotely controlled from each guard’s flat metal pad that they carried with them.
Mara stuck close next to Chris. She heard him say in a very low voice near her ear, “We could rush them at some point...now there are two of us.”
Mara said quietly, “Not yet, but we should watch for a chance if possible.” Chris nodded agreement, keeping his eyes on the two guards ahead of them. The third alien walked along behind, watching them unblinkingly. Mara wondered if they even had eyelids. Maybe they never blinked.
“Any idea what to expect?” she asked in a hushed voice to Chris. He shot a glance at the alien walking behind and shook his head slightly. “It’s different every time. I’ve always been alone before.”
“Let’s hope that’s a plus for our side.”

The corridors they went through all looked the same, one after the other. Doors lined them like wallpaper, each one of them the same except for an almost inconspicuous flat panel with a symbol on it. The square was always on it, like the symbol on Mara’s sleeve and the alien’s tunics, but each door’s square was filled with a different set of symbols. Mara looked in vain for matching symbols, but it seemed there were too many to keep track of. There were so many twists and turns, she was certain that even if they did escape, there was no way of finding their way out of this maze.
The walls were taking on a greener hue as they walked, which Mara assumed meant they were entering a new area. Finally, they turned a corner and came to a larger door. They had not seen a single soul except themselves the whole way. The door slid open to reveal a large green and white room filled with a variety of things. Mara could make out that some of the equipment must mean that they were in a lab of sorts.
