icon tutorial 001
made in photoshop cs5. i'm unsure if it's transferable.
As with most icons, you start off with a base. In this tutorial I will be using
this picture of Hatsune Miku that I found on Danbooru. Just a heads up, if you don't know what Danbooru is, it is NSFW. Please exercise caution when browsing Danbooru.
Next I make a copy of the base by hitting Control + J or Command + J (depending on your operating system) and then set the copy of the base to soft light. I also go to my filter tab and choose sharpen > sharpen.
Then I make another copy of the base and drag it above the soft light layer and set it to multiply. To finish the base, I go to the original layer and use the magic wand tool to get rid of the white background. You can use whatever method you prefer. Do this ONLY on the bottom/original layer!
After I have finished working on my base, I find a texture for the background that I'd like to work with. In this tutorial, I'm using a texture from
icon_textures by haudvafra.
Then I make a copy of the texture background by using Control + J/Command + J and then set the copy to soft light. I also use the sharpen filter on the copy.
These next few steps are changeable depending on the colors and look you're going for. For this tutorial, I have added
this texture by creamuts to the top layer and set it to soft light.
Next, I added a fill layer by going to layer > new fill layer > solid color. I set it to hard light and then used #7eaacc as the color I wanted to fill the layer with.
After that, I added a
texture layer by darinkabranco and set it to screen, 75%.
Finally, I used a
text brush by ennife and added "la couture" to the image. If you are using the image version, be sure to set the image to multiply and then just erase the rest of the words from around the one you want.
If you are planning on using this tutorial in your community, a basic rule of thumb is to credit every resource that is not yours. It is very respectful to the creator and it helps others find where your resources came from in the event that they wish to use them.
And there you have it! A beautiful looking icon in 9 simple steps. No, I'm not posting the .psd file because I'd like for you all to find your ~*inner creative being*~ and work with the colors yourself. You won't learn from directly copying someone's work, so play with the colors and images until you find what you like! Feel free to share your results in this post if you'd like. Good luck, everyone!
