For Graham and Joni
by Courtney K Whitmore
(if you steal this without crediting me I will kill you!!!)

She appears unresponsive, catatonic, occupied
the muddy ground looking to be incredibly fascinating to her.
He leans in to whisper in her ear, to wake her.
Or is she just weary of his coddling,
his ever-ready bandaids
disguised as kisses and hugs?
Her tears in the night invoke his greatest love
his greatest need, oh, how he wants to polish her up
and look with pride at his accomplishment.
She must need him, she must
for what is he if she is not looking to him as savior?
How can he help and what pain can he erase?
His tragic muse, the heroic King Willy.
Ignoring the cloud inside
deep inside his soul
that ever-present storm
he refused to acknowledge
that he looked right through
to the sunny day on the other side
the other side that the King and his lady
would never see.
The storms instead would gather, take them over
and strike their story down, relegating it
to a page of romantic rock 'n' roll lore.
