I recently attended the memorial service of a friend. It was a very sad and somber occasion, since he was a man of great wisdom and spirit. But, I was delighted in how his family chose to remember him. He was Buddhist himself, and his daughter who presided over the service is Wiccan. It was a lovely service with Christian acknowledgment for most of the participants, but within an elemental, American-native inspired circle and with readings from the Book of the Dead. It was a very kind and thoughtful blend of of his family's faiths and the message of the service was one of recognition and appreciation of Nic's positive influence on the people in his life - not a mourning of loss but truly a celebration in gratitude for his life.
It was a great comfort to me to be part of such a thoughtful ritual. Vast break from the the routine traditions of usual faith that is so ubiquitous that it's practically meaningless.
Thank you for this vignette, since it reminds me that the rituals of my life are mine to make as profound as I crave for them to be.
