Hey guys! I've finally settled back in somewhat, though I've been busy with revision for exams. I had an amazing time out in Indonesia, we dived twice a day on the coral reefs and I saw so much. The first time I dived out on a reef, I will never forget. There were just so many fish. I also saw two eagle rays, some sting rays, a sea turtle, a pod of dolphins, a huuuuge shoal of barracuda, some lionfish, a cuttlefish, one giant grouper and a beautiful flatworm. The experience of travelling to Asia was also pretty awesome. I had so much fun, I feel like I have so many stories to tell, but not enough time to get through them...
Either way, I wanted to get back to posting some art! This entry is about improvement over time. The other day I found an old sketchbook of mine from 2003. I laughed so hard looking through it, I could not believe how shit I was. So I've scanned in some of them and have redrawn the sketch next to it to see how much I improved. I'm pretty satisfied.
First of all, comparing some headshots, one male and one female. Apparently, I used to really like drawing in a crappy anime style... notice my complete lack of understanding of forms and generally how to draw. The guy in 2003 looks like he has a broken jaw. Also, ignore the 2008 guy that I drew from waist up, he sucks.
Yeah, I was really lame back then and could only afford a lined pad of paper as a sketchbook. Also, I'm happy that I've not only improved on 2003, but the 2006 doodles I made too. I found this sketchbook a few years ago, and I was going to do this then, but I didn't for some reason I can't remember. As you can see I understand facial structure a lot better now.
The 2003 version makes me laugh so much. I love how she's like O__O at her hands. I remember drawing this one too, and being proud of it. Oh God, how embarrassing... it makes me cringe so much to look at this old stuff. But in a way, it's really cute to see how inept I was. I was like... 14 or something. And I was a loser when I was 14. I guess I haven't improved on that, but at least the art has shown some growth.
Something from my Neopet days, to show some animal drawing skills. Oh Jesus Christ... the original looks completely MANGLED. Like, has is broken its neck or something? And did its head shrink at some point? I think the obvious answer is yes. Also, it appears to not have any joints in its front legs. Oh gods this is bad...
But the great thing is, it's given me some tangible evidence that my art has grown over the years. I really recommend that anyone who draws does something like this. Fish out some old sketches or drawings, and redo them. It really boosts your confidence and lets you see just how far you've come along, and maybe can help you get over some problematic areas by showing you what you struggled with in the past. If you haven't been drawing that long, or can't find any old drawings, why not make something now and then every year, try to redo it? I think I'm gonna add to these every year now, just as a record for myself as much as anything. And, Christ alive, I had such a laugh looking through my old sketchbook! I really suggest you try it.
Hope you all enjoyed that. I've got a few more things in the works, including a birthday present for my lovely friend Yolin (I was in Indonesia for her birthday!) and some assorted sketches and drawings for various games and TV shows I remembered liking.
Until next time!
