Summary: Phoenix and Mia's last meeting, post-disbarment.
It was a warm Friday afternoon the last time he saw Mia Fey. He was alone, for once, Trucy busy unpacking at the apartment. He was in the office again, boxing up his things where the knock sounded at the door. "We're closed!"
The voice from the other side was achingly familiar as she called out. "Phoenix?" The doorknob turned and he set down the box just in time to see her. Her. Why, of all times, would she be here? Why now?
She wasn't very tall, but there was something in the way she carried herself, even now, that made her impressive. The light purple robes were short and tight across her frame, her hair long and at her neck, a magatama that nearly matched the one he kept in his pocket as a keepsake. A reminder of the man he was, until just over three weeks ago.
"Mia?"
She nodded softly. "Maya told me...what happened. I don't understand, Phoenix. Why would you have done that?"
"Does it matter now?" He could taste the bitterness like scotch lacing his words. "I used forged evidence in court."
She shook her head, "Phoenix, there has to be some way, some way to get the truth. If only you could tell them-"
"It's over, Mia. It's too late, alright?" He shook his head and went back to his box, picking through the pictures and meager belongings he still had left. It hurt him just as badly to say it, but he remained with his back to her, his eyes closed. You can do this. "Sorry, Mia. Guess you were wrong about me. I'm no great lawyer, I'm just as bad as everyone else."
"Alright, then, Phoenix. You can believe that if you wish, but there will be those of us...those that know you better than to believe that."
And for a few aching moments the silence carried on between them, too many words left unsaid after all of this time.
"Thanks, Mia. For everything you've done. I'm just sorry you had to waste it on me."
There was a sound as she shook her head, and she sighed. "Phoenix..."
"No, it's fine. Thanks. For everything, Mia. But it's over now."
"Phoenix, it's never over."
But even Mia Fey knew when something was a losing fight, and so there was only silence for a few more seconds until he heard her move, heard the door close behind her as she left. For a few seconds he wanted to call out to her, to bring her back, to apologize and say that this time, this time he would try.
But he knew he wasn't that person anymore.
That was the last time that he ever saw Mia Fey.
