Chapter Nine: The Mistake Revealed
The next morning when she had woken up she thought she had been put into a different room. Bouquets of flowers covered the chairs, windowsills, and floor. On the table next to her were unopened cards. She grabbed the stack and began to rip open the envelopes. There was one from Mark, Riley, Starlynn, her mother, Tracey and some dedicated customers. Thankfully none of the envelopes were red.
Mark stopped by later that morning. Just sitting there he said nothing. He was not his usual crisp and tidy self. His hair was unkempt and his tie hung loose from his neck. Shannon had never noticed the curl in his hair before now. He looked as if he had not slept in days.
Shannon wished he would say something. He had come in silent and had remained silent the fifteen minutes he had sat in the blue plastic chair. She was getting impatient with him. Finally after a few more drawn-out minutes she burst.
“I think it is really dumb you are blaming yourself for the accident. You need to get over it already! I did!” She exclaimed.
She said this to no prevail. Mark still did not say a word to her. He just turned and stared at her blankly. His eyes were bloodshot and his face was gaunt.
Neither of them said a word. They just sat in the sick silence. Only the sound of the clock ticking could be heard. Outside a mixture of rain and snow fell smoothly past the window. Winter was just around the corner.
After several more minutes of the vexing silence Mark spoke, “The man that was arrested for Mr. Selven’s murder did not do it. He confessed as a publicity stunt.”
“What? So my uncle’s killer is still out there?” She exclaimed sitting up as straight as her sore ribs would allow.
Now it was Mark’s turn to be astonished, “Your uncle? What do you mean?”
“Well its simple really…he is my mother’s brother. Which makes my life so much more complicated let me tell you!”
He rubbed his temples, “Hold up. Freeze.”
“Freeze? Am I under arrest officer?” She chuckled.
“This is no time for puns Shannon.” He ran his fingers through his hair, “If Mr. Selven is your uncle then Tracey Coza is your aunt right?”
“Yeah I am pretty sure that is how my family tree is broken down. And if you are going to ask if Starlynn Coza is my cousin it is a yes and no situation.” She saw the blank look on his face. He did not say anything back so She decided to continue, “My father had an affair with my aunt. Thus Starlynn is born.”
Mark just nodded his head as if he knew exactly what she was talking about. It was obvious he was intensely confused. “So is it a tradition to get shot in your family or is it just a coincidence? Three people within three years is a bit odd don’t you think?”
“That is exactly why I am trying to find out who the killer is! Someone is targeting my family. Trying to kill us off one by one!”
“So who is it? Do you have any leads?”
Shannon bit her lip. She had held off telling him so long to keep the threats secret it had become a regular routine. But before she could stop herself the tears started to augment in her eyes. They streamed down her cheeks as she recalled the murders and admitted to her fear about the red envelopes. She even told him about the trashing of her house.
By the time she finished Mark was at her side comforting her. If anything she expected him to yell at her for not telling him or going to the police. But he did not get angry. For the time being he was not a cop learning new evidence. He was just a regular guy listening to his girlfriend tell her greatest secret and her greatest mistake.
