I Am A Hero

This is a little different for me but I still wanted to see it! I saw it yesterday ^_^

I originally thought this would be a zombie comedy judging by the trailer and the fact that it's supposed to be about a normal guy becoming a hero due to being thrown into a zombie apocalypse but, it turned out to be a lot more gory, slow paced and serious, which was a suprise and a nice surprise. Let's get into more details. Remember, possible SPOILERS!

So we start with this manga assistant and he's in his alter 30s and still hasn't achieved becoming a manga artist himself but won't give up but is told that his manga is too normal, especially when the protagonist is saying things like 'I'll protect you' xD but slowly within in the first thirty minutes or so, the zombieness throughs into full swing and thus his journey as a hero begins when he saves a school girl and swears 'I'll protect you' (which she laughs in his face cos come on(!), it's cheesy!) but she accepts it. And we follows them trying to get their way to mount fuji - where it's thought high places will kill the virus and also these zombies can't climb stairs or anything.

There are some comical moments that I found myself giggling at but, even though it was a FULL theatre, I seemed to be the ONLY one laughing many times except one part of about the zombie biting the rolexs (the guy behind me laughed harder than me than god at that moment).

I also flipped my shit! There's a part where a zombie gets hit in the head with a baseball bat and I totally wasn't expecting it and there was no music during the scene too (a lot of the scene in Japanese movies AND this movie don't have music/soundtrack in) so when it happened, I not only jumped out my seat, BUT I was also the ONLY one who jumped AND as an automatic response, everyone heard me go 'jesus christ!'.... I felt embarassed...

I really liked the relationship between the two main characters Hideo and Hiromi. I think their relationship and development between them was really sweet and cute! I really liked Hideo's character ARC as well and his final line 'I'm Hideo. Just Hideo' spoke A LOT (Major spoiler >> because in the beginning he's so desperate to be a hero like the one in his manga and in the beginning he introduces himself as 'Hideo, spelt as in Eiyuu which means Hero in Japanese)' but at the end after all he's been through, he realises being a hero isn't this amazing thing and it's something he doesn't want to be) and really sent a beautiful but also sad message. Hiromi was super cute and I was rooting for her to stick it out and survive. She was a sweetie. I also liked Yoshizawa Yu's character but that might be because I really like dungarees rather than the character himself xD and it was great to see Okada too! It's always great to see him act ^_^ Tokui Yuu's character was a sweetie too and his story - while he was a very minor character - was interesting and heartbreaking.

There was a lot of hopelessness and character emotions in this film which I actually enjoyed experiencing and watching. I've not seen the Walking Dead BUT I think it's very similar to TWD where it focused more on the human interactions and what's left of the human society and how they work now that the world has gone to shit rather than killing zombies (although there is like a massive 40 minute zombie killing scene towards the end).

This was also a very HIGHLY produced filmed. The special effects were really good, the prostetics and facial/zombie makeup was really well done too! But having said that, besides the directions, producer and cast, the entire crew were all Korean pretty much so that explains WHY the quality of the make up and SFX were SO good! It was a very well produced film and looked very good!

The major negative of this film is the plot. There was a lot that wasn't explained, especially about how the virus started and how it's cured and more importantly, what the fuck is going to happen to our main characters! The main plot was them going to Mount Fuji which they CLEARLY don't reach at the end of the film, so I felt a lot of information was left out and lots was left unexplained and I wanted to know if they make it out and if there's a cure and I really wanna know if it ends well for Hideo and Hiromi SO badly!

---

Overall: Very high produced movie with great SFX and zombie make up! Focused a lot more on the human emotions and was a lot darker than I was expecting. I really enjoyed the main characters but unfortunately the film let a lot of questions go unanswered and there was no real resolution which is a shame =[
