Those of you who watched The Colbert Report last night most likely saw Andrew Keen as the interview guest, who basically said that art is defined by how much money you make off of it (or: if you make money off of it, it's art. If you don't, you're "amateurish" and not worthy of artistic expression), and that he says the Internet is ruining art. I... what? What? I... no no no no NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO A TRILLION TIMES NO. Art is not defined by how much money it makes. It's just... NOT. True artists know this. Now, I have no problem with British people--in fact I love Brits--but this guy was just a fucking douche. I disagreed with pretty much everything he said. And I'm of the belief that if you can't find anything at all to entertain you on the internet, you can't be entertained.
I got the impression that the guy was basically saying that if you don't shell out cash for every single page you view on the internet and give it directly to the owner of each site, you are, for all intents and purposes, a criminal. Now he may not have meant that, but if he did, that is so flawed it's not even funny. He also wrote a book which I will NOT be buying.
I love the internet. If it hadn't been for the internet I wouldn't have gotten back in touch with my friends from highschool again and I certainly wouldn't have discovered at least 75% of all the bands I currently like.
At least Stephen totally owned him:
Keen: "How much money have you made on the internet?"
Colbert: "None of your goddamn business."
PWNED! YES! I fucking love you, Colbert.
Also:
Colbert: "How do you feel about the internet?" (this quote may be off, I was only sort of half-listening at this point)
Keen: "I loathe it."
Colbert: "Loathe? Is that British for 'love'?"
Keen: "No, loathe."
Colbert: "I don't know that word. Is it on the Internet?"
I'll only be worried when I log on and instead of my email homepage I get something that says this: "We're sorry. The Internet has been abolished, because some British asshole on The Colbert Report said that he hates it. So we're respecting the wishes of one individual instead of several billion in the majority. Go find something constructive to do. Have a nice day."
EDIT: According to a comment on
colbert_report, Keen has a blog. Now I officially hate him, because he's a fucking hypocrite.
