Title: Falling through
Fandom: Doctor Who
Characters: Astra Sigma, Lacey Sigma
Setting: Time War
Summary: The Ice General leads her troops one final time.
Notes: Written for a Tabletop RPG. This is how Lacey gets from the Time War to the game.

The Ice General marched in front of her troops. Once upon a time, the hard red head standing in front of the battle weary troops was a small, quiet little archivist with a husband and a family. But now all that was gone. Her children were dead, two of her grandchildren as well, two were with her here on the battlefield, and the other two were too young to hold a weapon. Her great grandchildren had died in a hit and fade. She glanced at her lieutenant, her niece, that she had helped raised. Astra, the Astronomer, with her cat ears and cat eyes. The girl had been teased all her childhood for that. The Ice General, once Lacey Sigma, the Mystic, turned to her troops again. “It’s time to move.” Her voice held no compassion anymore, no remorse for those lost. Just a general with orders.

“But General-“

“No buts, Soldier,” she said, she didn’t learn names of soldiers anymore. Only three in this latest batch did she know. “We’re to take their left flank out. Now get up. You’re wasting time, and each minute, each second you waste, one of your fellow soldiers die. So think about that the next time you complain about marching and fighting.” She turned, the troops behind her clamoring to their feet. One didn’t argue with the Ice General, one just followed her orders.

The march felt like hours, often stopping for skirmishes with the Daleks and their allies as they came closer to their target and the enemy lines. “General,” Astra said, “I’m getting a strange reading. It’s abnormal Rift Activity.”

“That’s normal, Lieutenant. Ever since this bloody war started, there’s been abnormal Rift Activity all over the universe. And that was before they shut the war behind the Time Lock. Keep Moving.”

“This is right on top of us,” She said, then pointed behind them, “look!”

The Mystic turned about to lecture her about distractions when she saw the flash of white light. “Shit, all right, time to move people, we don’t know if it’s dropping off or picking up so let’s not find out.” The troops didn’t argue, and they started running. They’d lost too many good men and women to Rifts and she was not about to lose anymore.

“Aunt Lacey!”

The Ice General turned, “No, Astra!” The younger Time Lady had tripped and fallen, and the Rift was moving right for her. Mystic ran as fast as she could, shouldering her weapon so she could pump her arms and try to move faster. She dove for her niece, only to plummet through the Rift just as it caught up with her niece. She screamed in frustration and terror as the blinding light engulfed her. She could only pray they ended up at the same point, and somewhere they could survive.

She wanted to swear when the light faded, but didn’t. Thankful for the respiratory bypass that kept her alive, she wondered how long though. Time Lords could only survive minutes in the vacuum of space, and what were the odds she’d be found. Her body was already feeling the effects of the freezing cold temperature. She looked around for Astra, but there was no sign of the girl. She was starting to shut down from the cold, her lungs starting to burn because even a respiratory bypass wouldn’t keep her alive without some oxygen.

She was losing consciousness when she thought she heard a sound she knew all too well. I wonder if delusions always come just before death. She thought as she saw a familiar blue box through graying tunnel vision.
