John Hart shook his head as he stood on the outskirts of town. “Leave for a few weeks, and town falls apart. And Jack thinks I'm not needed.” He chuckled, walking towards the Manor. He paused, hearing what sounded like two children talking. Judging by the damage the area seemed to have taken, two kids out seemed out of place. He headed off in that direction, not sure what to expect. He followed the voices. There was a small drainage ditch and that seemed to be wear the voices were. Sounded like a boy and a girl. They might have been talking and laughing, but there was fear and pain in those voices. “Well, well,” he said, peering down at the two kids. They were filthy, cold, by the way they were huddling together and shivering, and hurt. The girl looked up at him and he recognized those eyes. “More of Jack's children appeared while I was gone, I see.”
The two looked at each other, and started to laugh. “Hardly, Hart,” the boy said, gripping his sides as he tried to stop laughing. “She's one of Jack's little hellions, though.”
“Oi! You might as well be one of them, Harper,” she pointed out, “In case you've forgotten, you're living at the manor with us.”
John tilted his head. “Harper,” he looked at the boy again. He did look a bit like the Torchwood medic. He looked back at the girl. “If he's Harper, then who are you?”
“Lacey! Owen!” Both kids turned at the sound of Jack's voice, as did John.
“Well, that' answers my question,” he looked down at them, shaking his head, “I will want to know the story of this, because I'm sure it's going to be hilarious.” He turned and louder, called out to Jack, “Over here!”
“John,” Jack said, running over to his former partner, “when...” he started before he noticed the two kids. He let go a sigh of relief before kneeling down next to the two. He took in the splints. “What possessed you two to run after that bloody horse?” he asked, shaking his head, giving their shoulders a brief squeeze.
Gray was following behind, grinning with relief that the two were alive, and that John was home. “It's a long story,” he said, nodding to Lacey and Owen.
“I'd imagine. So, what happened around here?”
“Tornado,” Gray answered simply.
Lacey shrugged at her dad's questions. “I don't know, I don't think either of us were thinking very much.”
“It was my idea,” Owen added, “I got us into this mess.”
“Hey,” Jack said, waiting until both looked at him, “I'm not worried about whose fault it is. Let's just get you two inside, and cleaned off,” he turned to his brother, “Gray, can you run back to the house, and call Martha? Find out when she and Tom can spare a moment to come patch these two up properly. Oh, and Saxon and the Doctor, I don't think they have a com unit” Gray nodded, and ran back towards the manor He hit the com unit in his ear. “Guys, it's ok, we found them,” he waited a moment, then said, “I'm getting them back to the Manor first, until we know Martha is free. Doesn't seem to be anything terribly serious, thankfully.” He hung up, looking back at the two. Lacey definitely couldn't walk, “Owen, can you walk? John, think you can grab Lacey?”
The other man nodded, and moved to pick his niece up, “All right, Lace, go ahead and wrap your arms around my neck. Let's see if I can do this without jostling that leg of yours too much,” He took another look at, then slipped his arms under the girl, lifting her up. He stood waiting for Jack and the boy to get up.
Owen nodded as he managed to get to his feet. Jack stood with him, letting Owen use him to balance. He stayed close as he started walking, only tapping him on the shoulder to point out he was walking the wrong way. Owen made it a good half way back to the Manor before a dizzy spell hit and he nearly fell on his face. Jack was ready for it though, and caught the boy. He pulled him up into his arms, ignoring Owen's protests.
Lacey chuckled from John's arms as they waited for the two to catch up. “Owen, he's carried you before, why the fuss now?”
“I just don't like being carted around. I just needed a second,” he complained. He actually didn't really mind it that much, it was more feeling like he couldn't do it himself, that was what annoyed him.
“Too bad, kiddo,” Jack said with a chuckle, “you're getting carted around whether you like it or not.” Owen sighed, knowing that it was useless to argue at this point, but he refused to look like he might actually be grateful to not be walking when his head wanted to fall off.
Devon and Meredith met them as they came through the back garden. “The Doctor and Father are here,” Meredith said, looking at the two kids, “they brought Martha and Tom. The hospital is doing all right and they weren't needed. Most of the injuries have been minor.”
“Uncle Doctor said to bring them into the Tardis,” Devon added, waving at John. “Welcome home, Papa.”
“Thanks, kit,” he said, following Jack towards the blue box in the garden.
The Doctor and the Master were both waiting outside the Tardis, and the Doctor moved to take his sister from John. “Well, Myssie,” he said, smiling softly at his sister, “had enough adventure for one day?” She rolled her eyes, but smiled, leaning her head against his shoulder with a nod. She hadn't heard the Doctor ask her that question since the first time she was this little, and managed to find more trouble than she could handle. “All right, then, let's get you fixed up.”
The Master shook his head, relieved to see her smile. “Well, now that that's settled, I'll make some hot chocolate,” he headed back into the Tardis. “Next time, love, don't--”
“Don't go chasing after the bleeding horse, got it,” she said. The Master chuckled and headed into the kitchen.
An hour later, both were patched up and sitting on the sofa with hot chocolate in the manor. Tessa was sitting next to the two, telling them about how the school went into total panic. “Seriously, everyone was screaming, course,” she stopped thinking, “it could be because you couldn't hear yourself think it was so loud.”
“yeah,” Owen said as Lacey rolled her eyes, “we know.”
Jack leaned in the doorway separating the living room from the kitchen, watching the kids. Owen and Lacey looked about two seconds from falling asleep, not that he was surprised. They'd had a rough afternoon. It was just the family left now. Gwen had been the first to head home once the search was over, wanting to check on Rhys. Mickey and Jake had gone home to check their flat. Martha and Tom were back at the hospital. Gray and John were in the kitchen, Gray filling John in on everything that had happened, while Devon leaned against her Papa. The two Time Lords were sitting next to the sofa, laughing with the kids at something Tessa was saying. The twins were helping Ianto get a room downstairs ready for the two, since Lacey wouldn't be up for climbing stairs for at least two weeks.
It looked like a normal family night in, if it weren't for the injured kids. Jack had never been more thankful to see John than he was when he called his attention to where they had been. He'd been worried they wouldn't find them alive. He didn't want to think about having to tell the family, and he wouldn't have to, thankfully. He blamed himself though. They had been hurt because they'd been on their own. Saxon was right. He'd have to think of a new arrangement. They might have their memories, but they weren't adults anymore. They weren't really thinking or acting much like adults anymore. And he couldn't blame either one of them, knowing the childhood they'd had. Here was their chance to really be the kids they never could be.
“Jack?”
He turned back to his brother, pulled from his thoughts. “Yeah?”
Gray had moved at some point and was standing near the older man. “We need to work out what we are going to do with them. They definitely can't stay alone while they're injured, Lacey can barely manage to hobble to loo.” He looked at the two as the Doctor pulled the forgotten cups out of their hands as they slept, and the Master moved to cover them with a blanket until they moved them to their bedroom. “I mean, Sharkbait's a bit beaten up, and with the family emergency, I can take the time off until they're healed.”
“But we can't leave them alone after that either,” Jack agreed, “Both the Doctor and Saxon teach, so there are days when they can't. There's always Rhys, as well.” He hated asking the new father to not only worry about Maldwyn and Edwart, but to look after Lacey and Owen as well, especially since the first week they'd been so...ill tempered.
Devon walked up to join her mum. “Meredith and I are usually done with classes by two, we wouldn't have a problem staying with them, or bringing them over to the flat. And on Tuesdays and Thursdays Tavish is done by ten.”
Jack gave a half smile. “Thanks, that will help out. I could probably get the team to even agree to a rota.” He didn't feel like he had to say he would be staying with the kids while they healed as well. He felt guilty that this had happened to them. He turned to his family in the kitchen. “You guys should head home, make sure everything is fine.”
Devon and Gray exchanged a look before turning back to Jack, “We discussed it all ready. We're gonna stay here, at least tonight,” she said. “Probably until they're better.”
“guys--”
“No Arguments, Jack,” John said, finally getting up, “I know you're a stubborn old fool most the time, but it's time you faced it.” He smirked, clapping the other man on the shoulder, “You aren't getting rid of me anytime soon.”
Jack shook his head. “Doesn't look like it,” he said finally. He was still trying to get used to the idea that his baby brother was now with his former partner, but they were happy together, and Devon was very fond of them both. He looked over at the twins as they followed Ianto into the kitchen. “I suppose you're staying as well?”
They both nodded. “It's not like you're lacking of space, Dad. I mean, we all have rooms here,” Tavish said.
Jack smiled. “Right. Well, then you guys better go get some rest. I think we're going to have our hands full with these two come tomorrow.” He nodded at Ianto who followed him into the den. He didn't even bother to ask the two Time Lords if they were staying. They'd been parked in the backyard since the two had been stuck as children. “We're gonna get these two into bed. We'll let you know if anything changes.” He looked at the time, chuckling. Somehow it had gotten on to almost eight o'clock. “Looks like these two are finally going to sleep at a decent hour.” He picked up Lacey as Ianto grabbed Owen. He stood carefully, trying not to jostle the young girl's leg. He followed his lover into the guest room, the kids' things moved in there temporarily. There was just one large bed, and they laid both children down, pulling the covers over them. Jack watched amused as the two curled into each other as they often did when sharing a sleeping space.
He was just about to close the door when he paused and looked back, a slight chuckle. Normally whenever the two were asleep together, Owen was the more protective, holding Lacey close, the girl often curled up as small as she could be into his side. Tonight, they were reversed. He shook his head, closing the door quietly and joined the others in the living room.
