Something Wicked This Way comes

Once life had been simple for Elena Gilbert; not that life is simple for a teenager, but in middle school when she would make Bonnie pinky swear to a secret, or hit Jeremy on the top of the head ( Read more... )

Damon got her message and wondered for a few moments if she'd sent the same to Stefan. What was he supposed to do about a message that hit him like a blow to the solar plexus. After his recent discovery left him reeling, unable to think straight about the woman who'd been the focus of his thoughts for a century and a half, Elena's message was potentially the worst he could have received ( ... )

Elena pulled her knees up to her chest, to stop from shaking. The covers around her like a shield, she kept calming herself, or attempting to do so. Beside her on the bed was a broken broom handle.

The cell rang causing the young girl to jump. Looking at the in-coming number she frowned, then answered. "Hi Jenna." Then she listened. "I'm fine you and Jeremy have a good time." Rocking back and forth. "No stay, I'll be find. I'm trying to talk Bonnie into going away for the weekend. Just have fun."

She threw down the phone down. 'Damon where the hell are you it's been hours?' Then it hit her like a ton of bricks, he still did love Katherine. Unbidden the tears began to fall, and she turn over away from the window lying in the fetal position.

It took her a moment, then she felt something. She was almost afraid to turn around, it couldn't be Katherine, she hadn't had an invite unless Jenna asked her in before she and Jeremy left.

But she turned, a look of relief danced across her pretty face.

"Damon, how did you ....," as the words spilled forth, she jumped out of bed, ran to him, wrapping her arms around him trembling.

"Sorry I doubted you," she whispered.

Damon was still somewhat bemused that Elena had called him rather than Stefan, but he wrapped his arms around her in turn, holding her close.

"I didn't get your message right away," he told her quietly, as close to an apology as he would likely come aloud, but he ran his fingers slowly through her hair and then over her back in a soothing touch. He kept his voice low, soft and soothing as well, maybe with the tiniest bit of compulsion in it, though more to calm her down than to override her free will. "It's all right. You're all right. Tell me what happened."

At first it was nothing, everywhere I went there was this owl. It wasn't until I was waiting for you that I put two and two together. But that was afterward.

Jenna and Jeremy have gone on this trip, I was out getting groceries when there she was, talking about how ripe my fruit was, then she was just gone.

On the way home, she was there again.

Then the owl was back - and it hit me; you're the raven, she's the owl. Then the house quiet ... I don't know I freaked. I'm stronger than this. *She pulled back from him, arms still around him, eyes scanning his face.

"Take me away somewhere, anywhere, just while my family is gone."

Damon listened with a frown tugging at his forehead, worry flickering briefly in his eyes before such a human emotion disappeared again. He slid his fingers out of her hair down to trace along her jaw, brushing lightly over her lower lip, though there wasn't so much a sensual movement in it as thoughtful ( ... )

I called Bonnie, telling her to stay put. *Elena lowered her lids," I had my reasons.

With Damon there she felt safer. "Stay?"

Damon arched an eyebrow slightly, but brushed his fingers through her hair again, not pressing about Bonnie.

"Of course."

I feel safer with you here. I'd rather have you here. There are plenty of bedrooms, you can sleep wherever you want.

Damon smirked slightly--it seemed required--though he didn't press the matter. "I should probably stay close," he said matter-of-factly. "If your aunt did invite her in, by any chance, she could have you out of here before you could scream and I could get down the hall."

Honestly, I was letting you think you had the choice. If you'd chosen otherwise I would have gotten you here one way or another. *she gave her best innocent look*

Fitting it should be you to be the first man sleeping in my bed.

His eyebrows arched at that, glancing at her bed. "What? Saint Stefan hasn't spent the night here yet? Did your aunt kick him out?"

*She pulled back punching him the arm as hard as she could.* NO, *she emphasized. He hasn't slept here, and I didn't call him, idiot, I called you.

*She stepped back furious.* You don't have to stay either. Everything isn't about him, he's not ... just never-mind.

Damon stepped back, looking torn between contrition and amusement. "I didn't mean to offend." He hadn't really. He had his own issues to contend with, and mocking Stefan was his way of handling his brother, much of the time.

"Elena, I'm sorry. I'll stay."

"Okay," she breathed. "I'm sorry, I'm just freaked out, there's just been too much. Did I tell you I was adopted? Isn't that a kicker."

With the back of her hand, she wiped a tear away. "I'm usually strong, there's just so much in my head right now, I need you. Thank you for staying. I don't mean to be a wuss, or a bother."

Damon frowned a little, reaching out to brush her tears away, then tugged her back into his arms, holding her close. "You didn't tell me that, no. But I'm sure your parents still loved you very much, adopted or not. And you're not a bother."
