2011, eh?

Gosh, that went rather quickly.

We spent New Years at the Sky Palace. ted_the_bug 's parents own a flat on the 22nd floor of an apartment building on St Kilda Rd. The place was AMAZING. Decor was pure 80's: black benchtops, white carpets, downlights. The views were stunning. These shots do it no justice at all.

Also in attendance were pluto_pup , jesusandrew , 17catherines , vaingloriesque, and a bunch of other people who I don't think have livejournals. We saw the fireworks over the city, which were fantastic. A quiet and civilised start to the new year.

It's been a pretty good year for me. Teaching really was doing my head in, and I didn't realise how bad I'd gotten until I was out of it. I was unpleasant to be around for a while there, and as often happens, the person I love the most had to bear the brunt of that. Thank you acerbicmuffin  for being there for me. I love you.

The Library has been fantastic. I've had a chance to be creative, to talk to teachers, librarians, and other experts, to expand my horizons, to make new friends, and to put "writer" as my job on my tax return. I love being in the city on a daily basis. I do miss some parts of teaching, and the next year will be a series of new challenges, but I'm feeling refreshed and engaged in a way I hadn't for years.

Other: been to a bunch of cons and events this year, of which the highlight was Worldcon. No Worldcon next year, but we'll see what else comes up. Have reconnected with some old friends, but neglected others. Have read more books, and listened to more music. Still not seeing many movies. Have not written, except for work (which, granted, has been tens of thousands of words, but still!).

And as a good way to end a new years post, Charlie Stross reflects on whether anything good has happened in the last decade.
