Yes, I've seen STAR TREK. (AND OH YEAH, SPOILERS IN THE COMMENTS, so beware. I am in the know. There was a special preview screening on Saturday morning that I got to attend (and was lucky enough to be let in - they turned probably 100 people away who had been standing in line for an hour). Since this is not a review (I will be writing one of those later at my
movie review LJ), I will only speak of the film itself to say that it's a very fine, fun, enjoyable, exciting summer blockbuster type of movie, and did not disappoint me almost at all (and the things that did are just the kind of picky, whiny things that get on my nerves about most big shiny summer scifi blockbusters).
But, more relevant to us folks here, Mr. Zachary Quinto portrays Spock - and comports himself admirably. And knuckle-bitingly gorgeously. Oh, this guy is going places. And yes, he brings the HoYay! to every single thing he does. His body is rockin', he looks great in a neo-Starfleet uniform, and he can perform very effective beatdowns that look like they actually really fucking hurt.
And as Spock? Playing one of my favorite characters of all time, somehow, he manages to not only make me not want to kill him, but really appreciate his interpretation of the character. It is nuanced, subtle, complex, sexy, cerebral, and sexy. And also sexy. And schmoopy - many was the time that I wanted to give him a big ol' hug and a mug of plomeek soup. Also, sexy. Did I mention the sexy? There was sexy. And a bit fierce as well; I had the repeated urge to give
snaps every time he said anything. But that's Zachary for you. I have that ALL THE TIME.
And I will also say that - based on his performance alone (though Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, and yes even the squinty, cockeyed Matt Damon/Ed Westwick gene splice Chris Pine owned their parts and I loved the hell out of all of them, too) I hope to God that there's a sequel. Even more than one. I want more. I want more Quinto Spock. Nimoy, you know I will love you forever, but there's room in my heart for him now, too. They aren't really playing the same character, except that they are... except not. Somehow, it works.
