[†] → Telephone: ALL

Nov 08, 2011 14:38

[It's been a while since Allen used the phone, in fact this may be the first time he's gotten around to making a call himself, but it seems an apt enough time and an apt enough reason. He clears his throat briefly and then speaks in his soft, somewhat tentative English accent.]Professor Watney has offered to go with me to the local police station ( Read more... )

[ missing people. it didn't take long at all.

giovanni leans forward, bracing his elbow onto his knees, his smile faint but curious. the other holds the phone to his ear, and he looks across the room through his glasses. ]

... That's a lot of people for our hosts to lose, isn't it. Did they all go at once? [ though he only recognises captain becker from amongst them, is it worth considering it a threat...? ] ... Maybe the ones responsible for opening the gate are trying to clean up their mess.

[ a pause. a slight exhale through his nose. ]

I intend to go.

Wha--?

[Something in that suggestion makes Allen's stomach clench. It's not only pessimistic and morbid, but for a split-second it makes him wonder, makes him question... They really don't know much about this group of people helping them, do they? They don't know this world, they have to just trust what they're told and what if they're wrong.

He shoves the doubt down; it won't do to panic in the only space they have without clear reason or evidence.]

It's a possibility, but there's no evidence of that at all, sir. And while I don't wish to underestimate these men or the situation, I find it hard to believe they'd be able to clear away some of the people listed so easily. At least one of them is a skilled fighter I know very well; she wouldn't be taken down easily. I don't believe the professors are responsible.

... And you intend to go to the ruins, or intend come with us to the station?

And the cult? [ his smile remains. ] It took two groups to make that portal exist, after all. When they're the two groups who know our origins, and some of us go missing...

Isn't that incriminating.

[ ... and though the professors had interrupted the ceremony... what about the cult itself? what about this investigation they're all planning? how much of that could be playing a role in these disappearances?

hahah. he wasn't worried, especially. but if there was something getting in the way of going home, that would be a pain. ]

You have the station covered well enough, I see. I'll be going to the mansion.

[ less eyes to watch over him, there. more than likely. ]

It may be incriminating for this cultist group, but not for anyone involved in this mansion and its maintenance, I'm sure. [He isn't close to any of the people who had been so kind as to arrange the mansion to be their safe-haven, but he is protective enough of the idea of giving people the benefit of the doubt sometimes several times over to remain firm in his response.] But even then, for all we've been told, the cultists are only men too--that's why they must have been summoning something, because they don't have power themselves.

[He draws in a quiet, slow breath; he has to stick to that logic and not let himself spiral into panic from the possibility that the unknowns this man is flagging up may hold a worrying amount of water.] Lenalee certainly wouldn't be taken down by mere men.

Has something in particular sparked your interest about the ruins, sir?

[ the body. ]

Nothing in particular.

[ giovanni's mouth presses thin, for a moment. even with the remains cleared away, it's the most tangible lead to what may be the cult, the last place the responsible parties were known to be. and whatever they might've left behind.

but then, it's also a place that's already been scoured. whether or not it's been rendered useless... well. he'd have to see that with his own eyes. hahah, perhaps it's really just instinct, chasing the source of something violent?

eventually, he exhales in a soft whistle past his teeth. ]

- I don't think it's the professors, either. If it's a choice between them and the cult. [ if watney is any indication, they would all be too congenial to try anything. and too human to succeed at it. the cult at least has the ear of something stronger than them, it seems. ]

... Or do you think some of our little group got sick of waiting?

Just curious, then. [At least that's the assumption he draws from that reply. There is nothing wrong with that to his mind: they were asked to investigate after all and curiosity is as good a place as any to start. At least that's what Allen figures.

But even with the logic of curiosity, something in that tone sounds...off. Provoking, even.]

I can't speak for some of them, I didn't know them personally myself so it is a possibility, but I know the person missing from our group wouldn't have gotten impatient and just not said something to us. There's something else to it.

[ ... the lenalee he mentioned, he's guessing. ]

Are you worried?

Since a human couldn't take her down.

[Allen had to admit--if only to himself--that was a good question... Not a comfortable one, but still.

He drew in a steady breath though and forced a level tone as he replies, trying to keep what he said to a minimum at this point.]

No. There are some people I'd be worried for, but not her.

It's just given it time to mature! Like a fine wine. nebensonne December 29 2011, 23:42:16 UTC
[ giovanni can't help the slight, secretive look that steals across his face, and he leans his face against the knuckles of his free hand delicately, gazing out of the window beyond.

that's an almost strange amount of honesty, from a complete stranger. ]

People who've also gone?

Or people you're afraid to lose?

[In the very short amount of time this conversation had been going on Allen found, somehow, that he has been verbally backed into a corner. A very anxious corner.

You ask like those things are necessarily mutually exclusive. People's lives are important, so it's vital that we find out what happened to them. None of them seemed incapable, but we can't find a trace of a single one of them and that's concerning on several levels.

Are you saying you're not concerned?

devours it. nebensonne December 30 2011, 00:51:22 UTC
[ giovanni keeps on looking out of the window, frozen while he listens, staring at the sunny sky and pleasant weather just beyond. the sun is on his side of the house, casting pleasant illumination across everything. it's strange to see so much of it.

and for someone who is used to people going missing without comment, someone who's incredibly apathetic to the concept of all but one of the people in this house going missing, he's hardly sure how to respond to that question. it sounds more like a challenge. it's expectant.

perhaps he's trying to get a feel for giovanni's nature. ]

I've just heard about it. I'm not sure what to think, yet.

But if you know the people who are missing, and their nature... it's natural to agree with you. I'd guess.
