Where Elizabeth Stood-Special Features
So originally this fic was supposed to show that the constant woman could win in the end. Later it became sort of a testimony to my opinion on how fandom sometimes portrays Ginny. Of course, I was too scared to write the fic about Ginny herself, so I created my own character who was kind, attractive, and clever, and tried to show that even with all these advantages, there didn’t have to be some huge flaw-like her cheating on Harry or only interested in his fame or money-to make her unworthy of him. I tried to show, and I hope I succeeded, that the simple fact that Elizabeth was not Hermione and had not been with Harry through the most important trials of his life would be enough for their relationship not to work.
I am really upset that people feel comfortable condemning an entire book because it did not feature the ending they desired. Though I think Harmony is pretty fun to right, sometimes it’s more prudent to recognize defeat. JKR wrote these books, these characters are her own, and it was up to her how they turned out. I loved Deathly Hallows, I loved the opportunity to incorporate it into this last fic, and I could never bring myself to hate canon. For a fan base so dedicated to a series, I can hardly fathom how people can so hate certain characters-like Ginny and Ron-and how they feel they have to write them as horrible people to make H/Hr work. Sorry enough of this ranting…
Special Features: I really like including all little details of my fics that go unnoticed usually, so if I’m feeling ambitious I’ll add them to the rest of my stories as well.
Elizabeth was meant to be loosely based on Queen Elizabeth I and a bit on Anne Boleyn, her mother. (This is where the name for Elizabeth’s sister came from, as well as the type of relationship she had with her family). When I first thought of writing this fic, I had been reading a lot of literature based on the romances and intrigues between Henry VIII and his first two wives, Katherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn(and no, Henry was not Harry!). Now, these were two very different kinds of women but I admired them both for different reasons. I resolved to base Hermione on Katherine, who was very steadfast and did not give up on maintaining the validity of her marriage even up to her death. Anne however, was a very talented courtier. She had ambition to rise higher socially, and the wit and resources to accomplish it. Elizabeth, who could coax a cloud from the sky (I know there’s a better expression out there somewhere, but my mind’s gone), is meant to possess some of these qualities, especially in ‘being everything to everyone.’ This is not necessarily a bad thing unless someone is being exploited.
Prinsen-I think this is a Dutch name meaning “royalty,” again going with the regal Elizabeth theme.
The date for the autumnal equinox of the year 2002 really was on September 23, four days after Hermione’s twenty-third birthday.
Bole is an actual color. It is the brown that most kids pick to represent tree trunks, hence Harry's comment.
Obviously, I picked the title “Where Elizabeth Stood” when I had written the first chapter only and had no idea where I wanted the rest of the story to go. But, if you’ve got a keen sense of the sleuth about you, you’ll notice that I’ve incorporated the phrase in every chapter. Sneaky!
The title of the last chapter is taken from Joni Mitchell’s song “Both Sides Now.”
