Silversmithing project - ploughed fields

Jul 10, 2019 19:59

Having finally finished my coursework for my Silversmithing course (hurrah!) I thought I’d post about it as some people have expressed interest.

The design brief was to design and fabricate a piece of jewellery inspired by Nature, using a variety of sources of inspiration including the work of an artist in another medium.

I decided to choose the theme of the rural landscape of Aberdeenshire, where I grew up. The place I grew up consisted of a primary school, about 6 houses, and the rest were farms. (In recent years it has doubled in size and now has four street lights and a name sign!)

This is it (the current version):

If you stand on top of the hill behind our house you can see a hill (or technically a range of hills with several peaks) called Bennachie. I wanted to include hills reminiscent of that in the design.

The artist I chose was Rebecca Vincent, a printmaker local to where I now live in Northumberland. I love her stuff, and bought one of her prints several years ago. She specialises in landscapes, in the medium of monotypes & etchings, and using stylised, simple shapes and interesting textures. Her website is at rebecca-vincent.co.uk.

This is the print I own (apologies for the rubbish photo):

Another example of her stuff:

Anyway, I came up with a design based on these elements:

And here is the final piece (again, excuse the rubbish photo):

I want to finish polishing it, particularly the silver parts, as it got a very cursory, two-minute polish at the last minute so we could get it photographed for the portfolio, and I’m planning on making a copper chain and clasp for it, rather than the temporary leather cord it’s on at the moment, but with a bit more finishing off I’ll be fairly happy with it. It’s not perfect, but it’s more or less what I was going for.
