The last few times I've posted here, with the exception of kiddie pics, I've pretty much been complaining. This morning, I woke up early for a Sunday feeling well rested. It was a cool, sunny morning, so I decided it was time to get back on the bike. I got dressed for riding and hit the road. I did an hour on the levee bike trail and had lots of company. I returned home feeling invigorated. So much so, that I dragged the lawnmower out and cut the backyard. As I was nearly finished, I noticed a color I had never seen in my yard before...orange. I planted a Louisiana navel orange tree in the back yard about two weeks after I bought the house in October of 2005, just two months after Katrina. It was a somewhat mature tree and I was told it would yield fruit in 3-5 years. I only planned on staying in this house a couple of years, until my old neighborhood got back in shape. Then I'd sell this one and buy a house there.
I stopped the lawnmower and walked over to the tree. There, in a tight cluster, were four oranges about the size of a baseball. I stood there for a moment, then reached out for them. They were firm. I plucked one off the tree and peeled it slowly, thinking some alien-like insect would come springing out to eat my face. Instead, the skin broke away effortlessly, revealing the juicy pulp beneath. I broke off a wedge and slowly bit the tip to taste the juice. It was sugary sweet and a little tart. I felt a smile creep across my face. I plucked the rest and brought them inside. I finished cutting the yard, cleaned up and headed for the kitchen. I made a cup of tea, cut two slices of homemade whole wheat/bran/flax/sesame bread that I baked on Friday, and grabbed an orange. I sat down at my computer, used my cell phone to take a couple of pictures to post here, and now I'm going to sit on my patio, drink my tea, eat bread and enjoy MY orange!
Well...mine and Nature's!
Good morning!
