(i apologize for sucky title and forgetting how to capitalize properly.)

krystal runs her hand across the tops of the cat's tails, trailing her almost empty backpack behind her in the mud. the lakeside isn't really a lakeside. it's a small creek that's formed from the farmers' runoff. still, it's the closest thing to a body of water there is in krystal's town. plus, there are tall stalks of cat's tails nearby. it does the job.
the creek leads straight from school to krystal's home. even with krystal's fondness of the tall plants, it's actually only been a few weeks since she'd really noticed them. even touched them.
because it's been two weeks since jinri has left for the city.
seoul.
it seems like some far away fantasy place. like oz.
krystal can imagine jinri as dorothy but she wonders. is she the scarecrow for not going with her or is she the tin man for feeling so hollow lately?
"possibly both", krystal thinks.
because she's stupid enough to think that she could have followed jinri's family. and because she's too empty now that her heart's in a red luggage case somewhere in seoul, trapped in jinri's new bedroom.
"or maybe i'm toto" considers krystal. "the real hero of the story."
she smiles wryly.
when the thought "but has toto ever been separated from dorothy like this?" reaches her, she drops her backpack unconsciously and it gets left behind in the brushes at the roots of the cat's tails.
there's a rumbling train that's been passing for a full minute. and when krystal comes back to reality, she's immediately drawn to the tracks.
the freight train is slow enough for krystal to walk next to it and match its pace. thoughts of parents, her sister jessica, and school pass her like tiny anxiety attacks. but what makes her truely breathless is the question: "what if she isn't happy to see me?"
she hops the train anyway and squishes fingers into her pockets. she hadn't eaten lunch for a few days now. because who has an appetite when your best friend has moved so far away?
the train's heading in the general direction of the city but she hopes it'll take her as close as possible. she only has 50,000won for a taxi and dinner.
she's excited nevertheless. and anticipation makes her bullish.
she can walk. if needed be.
she can starve. because what's just a little less?
but she prays hard. if she can see jinri smile at her once more...

later, krystal's mother drives to seoul in the middle of the night to pick her up. she's furious and jessica's in the backseat looking bewildered and a little awed at her younger sister's audacity.
but.
nothing brings her down and the ride back home doesn't wake krystal up from the dream. she's reached oz but her mother isn't glenda the good witch. she has what she's come for. yet her red heels don't have to click just yet.
jessica sits in the passenger's seat up front with their mother, calming her in quiet soothing tones. in the backseat, krystal tries her best to hide a smile. if she's toto, this time, dorothy has found her. krystal reaches a hand to the trunk and grasps a stowaway's hand.
jinri's.
