Good Gravy, what an excited couple of days i just had, and what an exciting couple of days i have ahead of me...
Sunday Night i saw Sonic Youth for the first time, i thought our seats were going to be on some balcony near the nose bleeds, but the forum turned out to be a fairly small place and we were much closer than expected! Finally seeing them live felt so good, they played all new songs except for "Tom Violence" off EVOL (which he dedicated to Tom Verlaine, the genious of the band Television) and "Mote" off of Goo, seriously no band can touch what that band is possible of doing live, they have been at it for 20+ years and they have complete control over the sound they create together, i have never heard or seen anything like it and i wanted to cry and puke all at the same time, and to top it off Maresa bought me a Sonic Youth Beach towel, glorious! Even more glorious was leaving before Pearl Jam played, because i dont like that band.
then last night
I saw them again for free at the Jimmy Kimmel show, the line to get in wasnt bad and there wasnt a whole lot of people, it was relaxing and easy to get a good spot, it was basically like seeing one of the smaller side stage bands at warped tour, everyone who was there for sonic youth waited outside (where the concert part of the show is filmed, in the back parking lot behind the studio) while they film the show, the guests were tracy morgan, some football player, and some indy car driver girl who had a fat head. Jimmy Kimmel is a trashy retard, and 96% of the time is not even funny! After screwing up not once but twice saying "up next we have music from eagles of death metal" it was time for Sonic Youth to play, effing Tracy Morgan came out and shook hands with the band then sat on the couch on stage and was later joined by stupid Jimmy Kimmel and amazing SARA SILVERMAN! Seeing Sonic Youth on stage with Tracy Morgan and Sara Silverman was surreal enough, but seeing this band that i have idolized for years up close playing a FREE NINE SONG SET was unbelievable!, again, all new songs except for "(I've Got A) Catholic Block" off Sister and "Shaking Hell" off Confusion is Sex(!!!)
Me, Maresa, Dave and Kel, didnt get much (if any) air time despite our attempts (except for the shots of Jimmy Kimmel and Tracy Morgan saying their goodnights, you can see me in the background jumping up and down with my arms in the air as everyone was just standing there), and despite the efforts of the Jimmy Kimmel hype man, this big loud bald guy who would get everyone excited for the cameras and hold up any sonic youth merch they might have, he secured a spot in my, "you sewww cray-zayy" book when after filming some crowd shot he screamed into the microphone, "YOU GUYS WENT SONIC YOUTH CRAZ-EEEE!!!" The show was really good and special and funny but it didnt end there!
After the show we raced to Tower Records for a meet the band autograph signing thing, while we waited outside guess who got into his car and almost hit us with it, CHRIS ROCK! so not only was sonic youth on stage with Tracy Morgan, but they were in the same record store as Chris Rock, Steve Shelley (the drummer) parked right where me and maresa happened to be walking, and no one else saw him, so i got to get my picture taken with him, basically meeting them was incredible and pointless when you think about it, cause i didnt have anything to say to them, they have heard and seen it all, but it was a really good experience meeting one of the most important and legendary bands of our time and i will never forget it!
Now tomorrow i set sail to see Bill Cobsy Live!
"i think i died in that accident cause this must be heaven!"
