Given to Koga

History:

Discussed with Koga-mun, obviously~

Janine has always lived a life of humility and self-discipline; the only family she has ever known is her father, Koga, a man she intensely idolizes; her mother had died when she was born. Despite not having a maternal figure in her life, the love and attention her father, as well as his disciples, gave her was more than enough to make her feel cared for. She was known around the city as the Gym Leader’s daughter, something she took considerable pride in. With her father and the disciples of the ninjutsu school Koga also ran, Janine was raised in a very loving environment, completely convinced that there was no other father in the world that could even begin to compare to him.

Janine was perfectly content living within the confines of her father’s ever-present shadow, but fate was not: when she was almost eleven, Koga had received word that he had been requested to join the Elite Four. Upon receiving the invite, he was conflicted, and understandably so: while very keen, Janine was still young and lacked the experience and temperament a Gym Leader needed to succeed and he did not wish to leave her on her own. Janine was genuinely happy for her father and encouraged him to seek greater heights but at the same time, she was deeply distraught, because he was her entire world; for the majority of her life (and to this day), Koga has been Janine’s father, her mentor, and most importantly, her closest friend. But what had upset her more, however, was seeing Koga so conflicted over the entire thing. It didn’t take long for Janine to decide that she would inherit the gym, regardless of how she felt, but it took much longer to convince her father.

At thirteen, she finally inherited the Fuchsia Gym and her father had left for the Elite Four. It was here that the true gravity of the situation really hit Janine-she was no longer an apprentice or a shadow, but the Fuchsia City Gym Leader. While she still had the senior students give her guidance when it was needed, she was the one who was in charge of it all. This realization unsettled her immensely and it eventually led to her questioning her abilities: what if she just wasn’t good enough to handle the responsibilities? What if she ended up disappointing her father in the end, in spite of what he had taught her all these years?

The inner turmoil she faced had unfortunately manifested itself in her poor battle performance and as a result, she quickly became withdrawn and depressed. She ended up losing more than she won, which bothered her immensely, even though Koga had taught her to look at defeats as ways to gain experience. In due time, she zealously applied herself and her team to hours and hours of training, but as much as she put herself through, she knew there was something missing. What it was, however, eluded her.

Janine had been plenty jaded by the time of Ethan’s arrival, and ultimately, she wasn’t very surprised to find herself defeated by this boy. But there had been something in him that she hadn’t ever seen before; it was an undeniable connection to his team-he had treated them not just as tools to attain victory, but as friends, a close knit family. Brief words had been exchanged afterward (she never was the type to say a whole lot) and she had discovered that this boy had become the Champion and had defeated her father in battle.

It had all fallen into place at that moment, and Janine found out what had been absent all this time: a drive. Not just a drive to please others, but a drive to please oneself. All this time, she had been fighting for her father’s dignity and pride, not hers, and that was what had been hindering her all along. She thanked Ethan, and made a promise to truly apply herself to not only become stronger than Ethan, but to become stronger than Koga.

Soon after Ethan’s victory over her, Janine temporarily closed the gym and decided it would be in her best interests to explore new regions in order to grow. She did not choose to challenge the Gym Leaders in Hoenn, but instead contented herself staying out in the wild with her team to become closer. When she was finished exploring all Hoenn had to offer, she moved on to Sinnoh and was met with one of the biggest shocks of her life: cuddly Poison-type Pokémon existed. The Stunky she caught soon was a frequent companion of hers, and after her visit to the Great Marsh in Pastoria City, two Croagunks and a Skorupi she had found also followed the same path.

Janine returned to Fuchsia City a year and a half later, not only with improved self-esteem but also a new, much more relaxed outlook on life: whatever happened would happen, and instead of despairing over possible obstacles, she would find a way to overcome them. Giving the Stunky and one of the Croagunks to her father as gifts, she trained yet again with the Skorupi and the other Croagunk and reinvented her team. She was pleasantly surprised to find that, while she still lost to the occasional challenger, her wins greatly increased in number and she found herself, for the first time, genuinely enjoying being a Gym Leader.

At nineteen, Janine leads a hectic life, to put it gently. Not only does she run the gym, but she also teaches aspiring disciples the way of ninjutsu, just as her father had long ago. Somewhere between the intense matches and accidental spell misfire by the novices in the school, she finds time to visit her father every evening, always bringing him tasty food from home. Every now and then, moments of doubt plague her, but unlike when she was first beginning as a leader, Janine is much more emotionally mature and capable of resolving her fears and anxieties.

Personality:

Towards those unfamiliar with her, Janine is a young woman with an impeccable sense of dignity and high moral grounds, much like Koga: while not the most gregarious personality, she tries very hard to be polite and as easygoing with others as much as possible. This doesn’t mean she’s a pushover, however: if there’s something she personally does not agree with, she isn’t afraid to voice her opinion on the matter at hand. Usually Janine is blunt, but she remains civilized about it, being a staunch believer in retaining class and dignity, no matter the situation. Janine is also very careful not to step on the emotions of others and is very good at sensing their problems. She also is a dedicated worker-once she starts something or has been asked to do something, she will see to it that the job is done to the most thorough degree, this trait mostly likely stemming from her duties as both a Gym Leader and helping to run the ninjutsu school.

To the few that are truly close to her, she also is capable of having a significantly more casual side than her usual demeanor, although it takes some prying to get to this side, as she doesn’t easily dispense personal information about herself. With this amicable side also comes a childish one: with those she feels comfortable with, it’s a given that she’ll reveal a more ordinary side of herself, which means she’ll be more likely to show a temper, be sarcastic or even gush about the things in life that make her particularly happy. Her perception of herself has also changed drastically over the years-before she had always second guessed herself, but now, she’s much more comfortable with the choices she makes and their outcomes, preferring to live life as it comes.

Sample I [Your Pokémon, or your friend's, have been kidnapped by Team Rocket]:

Good evening, Team Rocket.

Let me take a moment to acknowledge the stunt you pulled while I was away from the gym this evening-either you have really been observing my crazy schedule thoroughly, or you hit a stroke of pure dumb luck. There aren’t many people that can navigate the gym without nearly killing themselves, so the fact that you captured my Crobat, even after setting off the cans of mace I had rigged, is very admirable, if not incredibly stupid.

I’m sure whoever broke in will be feeling very sore the next couple days, so I’ll be gracious: you are to return Crobat in its Pokéball within the next 24 hours, in the foyer of my gym. If you do that, I’ll forget this even happened. I’d prefer to resolve this civilly, but if in case you should not feel the same way, let me kindly remind you that the former Gym Leader of Fuchsia City, as I feel fairly certain you have at least heard of, is my father, who is now a member of the Elite Four. It would be most unfortunate if he ever caught word of what transpired tonight.

I am giving you the pain-free option, Team Rocket, and I sincerely hope you choose wisely. If not… let’s just say you will have preferred the mace in the eyes and bruised shins. Don’t say I didn’t give you sufficient warning.

Regards,
Janine of Fuchsia Gym

Sample II [YOUNGSTER JOEY wants to battle!]:

“If ya wanna see Green, ya gotta fight me first!”

Janine felt an eyebrow arch high into her hairline, as the young boy, whose face looked unnaturally fierce, brandished a Pokéball, blocking her path to Green’s private quarters. Having lost to several challengers earlier that day, she was in no mood to fight and thus took what she thought was the easy way out: backing up, she split into a run and leaped over the child.

When she landed with a soft thump, she glanced over her shoulder: the boy’s eyes were practically bulging out of his head, jaw slack. She felt herself chuckle: it was fun to screw around with normal people every now and then.

“H-how did you do that…?”

“I’m a ninja.” She felt a grin spread on her lips. “There’s a whole heck of a lot more I can also do, but I’m not a challenger, so I can’t play around; Green asked me to verify some things and so I’m-”

“You’re a ninja?” He sounded as if Arceus itself had descended before him.

“That’s… what I said, wasn’t it?”

“Then we totally gotta fight now!” he shrieked; “Rattata, go!” Out of the Pokéball darted the purple rodent; almost instantaneously the kid yelled, “Rattata, use Quick Attack!” With a cry, the Rattata charged forward and Janine was initially taken off-guard by its quickness. She managed to dart out of the way before it made any impact with her; this only proved to be more awesome to the sudden challenger.

“If I win, you totally have to teach me your moves!”

“Okay, listen, I’m completely flattered you want to fight, but I really have to talk with Green,” Janine answered, trying what felt like in vain to dissuade him from fighting here; “If you want a challenge, I’m the Gym Leader of Fuchsia City, so drop by-ack!” The Rattata was rebounding quickly and yet again, she dodged: the look in the kid’s eyes was completely serious and for a split second, she was tempted to just turn out of the gym and come back some other time.

She straightened her posture and with a small sigh, she finally conceded; humoring him couldn’t possibly hurt him, a challenger was still a challenger, no matter how… odd they were, and Green probably wasn’t holding his breath for her, anyway. “All right, fine. If it’ll make you happy, I’ll fight. But I can promise you-” Janine rummaged into her pockets and felt around for a certain Pokéball-“it’s gonna be a quick match! Crobat, go!”
