November Playlist: New & Nostalgic

Nov 17, 2007 15:52

Got these out later than I anticipated. Good thing autumn is clinging to us a bit longer. One set of contains songs which are particularly nostalgic to me. It's a blend from over the past five years or so. It's a predominantly mellow and thoughtful compilation, so bear that in mind when listening. The other set of songs consists of my standard "new music you should listen to" fare. All choice cuts, as usual.

November Playlist

1 - Recording by Alan Lomax - Early In The Mornin' - This is from a compilation called "Negro Prison Blues", so the exact persons in the recordings weren't listed, at least not on this track. This song captures the chain-gang rail-workers in all their glory.

2 - Scout Niblett - Nevada - I've been a fan of her work for quite a while now, however, her style is very much an aquired taste. It's not so much a mix of folk and grunge, as it is a patchwork of the two styles. Not to mention her dynamic voice... This is the first of her albums that I can say is a piece of work I really love. From start to finish, it's great. It's her most accessible and most mature work to date. If you like either of these two tracks, you should get the album. Four songs on this album also feature Bonnie Prince Billy.

3 - Thurston Moore - Silver>Blue - Thurston's first solo album was heavier than this, coming out during a more intense guitar shredding Sonic Youth era. The band has mellowed a bit since the 80's/early 90's and this new solo album reflects that transition as well. "Trees Outside the Academy" is a warm, thoughtful record. Moore employs his familiar melodicness and guitar dissonance through many of the tracks though, keeping a post-90's Sonic Youth feel while remaining distinctively his.

4 - Lightning Dust - Listened On - This is the first of three tracks on this list from the "jagjaguar" label (the other two are tracks 9 & 10.). I was browsing their sample mp3s and found some good stuff. Previously in the band Black Mountain, these two members, Amber Webber & Josh Wells, make some compelling, lovely music.

5 - Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich - Hold Tight - A super chill song from the first part of the Tarantino's "Death Proof". It's great to drive to...

6 - Karen Dalton - In The Evening - Karen Dalton has a very distinct blues voice, not for everyone, it even took me a couple of listens to love it, but I love it. Not alot of people have heard of her, because of the difficulting in getting her to record. Her underground presence & influence, however, is solid, with Bob Dylan, Fred Neil, and Devendra Banhart, among her admirers. She played with Dylan before anyone had really heard of him.

7 - Scout Niblett - Elizabeth (Black Hearted Queen) - A lovely song. More about Scout's new album above.

8 - Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova - When Your Mind's Made Up - This is from the soundtrack to "Once", which existed before the movie actually. Very Damien Rice-esque.

9 - Odawas - Alleluia - A grand yet mellow number that's quite autumnal actually. I can't think of anything to compare it with, off the top of my head. If you've got any ideas, let me know.

10 - Swan Lake - All Fires - This band is a collaboration of members of Wolf Parade, Frog Eyes and Destroyer. If you like any of those bands, you've probably already heard of this band. But regardless, it's a cinematic song with a lo-fi feel.

Bonus: Some Nostalgia

1 - Aphex Twin - Hy A Scullyas Lyf A Dhagrow - My Favorite track from Drukqs. Remeniscient of my time in Highland.

2 - Cyann & Ben - Recurring - One of my favorite groups. Remeniscient of last year and this year.

3 - Hands Away - I'm Never Coming Down - Written a couple years ago by a friend I met while in college at Highland two years earlier. This takes me back a couple of years. Sometimes more.

4 - Sonic Youth - Hoarfrost - Remeniscient of a winter road trip to Peoria... about four years ago.

5 - Beth Gibbons & Rustin Man - Drake - The two tracks on this that get me the most nostalgic for autumn in general, are the two by this fabulous woman, Beth Gibbons (you may know her from her vocals/lyrics in Portishead). I could put that entire album on here and it'd be justified. It's perfect autumn music.

6 - Beck - New Round - Listened to this album alot last year when it came out. This song and "Movie Theme" are the ones that take me back.

7 - Elevator Beat - Nancy Wilson - From the "Vanilla Sky" soundtrack. Recalls driving from Highland to Kansas City every weekend.

8 - Beth Gibbons & Rustin Man - Funny Time Of Year - Moody autumnal at it's most intense. This album takes me back to Highland. + Also to the roadtrip to Denver to see her play.

9 - Devendra Banhart - Autumn's Child - Just as nostalgic as this, are three additional Devendra tracks from his first, very lo-fi album: "Charles C. Leery", "Cosmos & Demos" & "Hey Miss Cane". I opted for this one, though, cause it's particularly autumnal in theme.

10 - Radiohead - True Love Waits- This reminds me of the autumn before moving to Highland, when I hung out with my friend James.
