For about two years now, I have been searching for a science fiction short story that I first read over thirty years ago. I know that it was in a collection that I re-read many times - I’m an avid re-reader of favourites - and I was convinced it was an Asimov work. Having scoured my bookcases (several times), asked all the science fiction fanatics

I recognize that quote!
I have to say I agree with you - not purely on intellectual grounds but in terms of personal experience. I've seen my share of pointless, "MEMEME" blogging, but as far as I can tell from my limited experience, that's only one part of this virtual realm. I know that I'm in it for the community - for the possibility of finding like minded people and extending my sense of connectedness, even in this incredibly fleeting and so easily misleading way. There aren't many people in my nearby surroundings who share my rather obscure interests (Star Wars fanfic? I don't even bring it up when people ask what I do with myself all day.) I write this blog stuff mostly to find out what I actually think and to see whether I can express it with any sort of clarity - but if I'm honest, it's also a way of putting out a feeler: Is there anybody out there who also finds this funny/sad/interesting? Here I am - where are you? Can we share a laugh or an interesting idea - even if it isn't gone into in depth - or maybe a moment of outrage at the state of the world?
And so when you call what you write here drivel (or the equivalent - I can't remember the exact words you used and if I go back to check I'll probably accidentally erase all this because I'm that clumsy) you're not giving enough credit to the possibility that there are those of out there who really enjoy it when you think and reflect out loud. Personally, when I find someone who remembers Asimov and who has read McCaffrey, I'm so happy I could jump up and down.
Just my 2 cents' worth.
I'm really enjoying what I've read of your blog! (reading backwards)

And oops...caught pinching your quote. That was a very thought-provoking entry of yours - found myself nodding agreement with every point you made. It most definitely is 'evolution' and I really do love this 'virtual realm' and all it may herald for our generation, the next generation, and all those thereafter. For the sense of community it brings and those moments of connection, I'm even willing to endure the 'MEME' mania :P
