Yes, I admit it...I watched Dancing With The Stars last night and tonight. In general, I’m not a fan of reality-type shows. But I have seen two seasons of Amazing Race and one season (not including this season) of DWTS and I think those two in particular fall into a higher category of entertainment than shows like Real World or The Bachelor.
Anyway, it was a pretty fun start to the season, and even though it might be that no one cares, I feel like making one of my rambling commentaries.
The male celebrities all went last night, so I’ll comment on those pairings first...
Penn Jillette and Kym Johnson -- I must say that he was a bit better than I thought he’d be. He wasn’t very good, exactly, but not horrible either. He’s definitely going to be using his sense of humor to help him stick around for a few weeks.
Jason Taylor and Edyta Sliwinska -- He was actually pretty good. For such a tall, muscular guy, I thought he was pretty light on his feet. He was kind of stiff, but the judges were right in commenting on his perfect posture, which added to the elegance of the dance. He should be able to stick around for a while.
Cristián de la Fuente and Cheryl Burke -- Well, he’s certainly got two important things going for him: he’s hot (gorgeous smile) and he’s definitely a good dancer. I agree about the hunched shoulders, but he was pretty fun to watch.
Adam Carolla and Julianne Hough -- I totally fell for Julianne when she was first on the show, paired with Apollo Anton Ohno. She is just adorable! I don’t think this is going to be her season, though...Adam was kind of funny (but not really), but there’s no way that he’s going to last very long.
Mario and Karina Smirnoff -- Although the whole no-last-name thing is kind of annoying, he was by far the best of the men. He’s really confident (maybe too confident...it was bordering on cocky at some points, though I can’t remember any specific examples at the moment) and seems to have the skill to back it up.
Steve Guttenberg and Anna Trebunskaya -- He wasn’t that good, but he looked like he was having a ton of fun out there, which is always fun to see. He really has a positive attitude about the whole thing.
And now....on to the women!
Shannon Elizabeth and Derek Hough -- Well, she definitely has a legitimate reason to show off those legs... Damn, those things are long! Anyway, I thought she did well. Very energetic and fun.
Monica Seles and Jonathan Roberts -- She needs to loosen up more, but I thought she had a nice gracefulness to the performance. This is so different from anything she’s had to do before (unlike the performers of the group, and some of the other athletes who are more obviously suited to dancing), so major kudos to her!
Marissa Jaret Winokur and Tony Dovolani -- She was so much fun! Ok, so maybe there wasn’t much substance to the dance itself, but still...I couldn’t do anything but smile while watching her! I hope the choreography gives her more to do in the next weeks.
Priscilla Presley and Louis van Amstel -- She also did a lot better than I was expecting! If I hadn’t known that she was nervous from the behind-the-scenes stuff, I never would have guessed just from her performance. She was really elegant and impressive.
Kristi Yamaguchi and Mark Ballas -- Ok, so I absolutely adored her when I was younger, so I was really excited when I heard that she was going to be on this season. And I must say, she was just stunning! She did a fantastic job too; she’s definitely going to be a front-runner.
Marlee Matlin and Fabian Sanchez -- She was so gorgeous and funny! She really does have an excellent sense of rhythm, and it seems like she and Fabian will be a great pair! I go back and forth with how much I like Jodi on TLW (yay, they showed a clip with Jennifer Beals!), but Marlee herself seems like so much fun! She’s totally proven that she deserves to be there (and certainly should make it really far).

So that’s it for this week! This is really a fun show, so I’ll be looking forward to next Monday. (Plus, it’s easy to comment on, so maybe I’ll actually stick with this for the rest of the season, unlike my spotty commentary on the other shows I watch.)
Well, I’m actually off to Austin, Texas for five days starting tomorrow, so I won’t be writing/commenting on anything for a bit, but I’ll catch up on reading stuff when I get back to New York. And then maybe I’ll find a way to finish the Sarah Connor Chronicles fic I’ve started, but haven’t been making much progress on...
dwts,
