I've recently had the privilege of being recruited into the most spectacular, history-making movement in the Christian faith I've ever heard of. This movement is called Gospel Theatre.
It started with a light-hearted small group talk, and an impromptu invitation from my friend to join her at an audition the following weekend. The night before, she asked if I still wanted to come, and on the spur-of-the-moment, I said yes. I did my first audition ever, and I made it. Today was the meet-and-greet for the cast and the overview of the musical production we're going to be performing for a 3,500 person audience in two and a half months.
I hadn't known what I was getting myself into and I wasn't expecting anything to come of my audition. This theatre company performed this play last year, called The Ultimate Sacrifice. They held it at their church, presenting it to over 4,000 people. They took it to the big stage and Toronto's own Mirvish Theatre Company is giving them a chance. This musical - the musical that I'm in, the musical I'm being considered a lead role in - is the breakthrough for the Gospel Theatre business. Mirvish themselves will show up to one of our performances to see if we're really delivering what they signed up for. They're taking a huge risk with this "church play," willing to see what kind of talent, what kind of art we bring to centre stage.
This is so incredibly exciting. It's novel, it's legendary, it's historical. It's a movement that I've been blessed to be roped into, and it was something that God definitely called me into, not something that I chose or found on my own. I'm so excited to be a part of this revolution in the arts, in worship, in the mainstream, secular business. Whether it means singing, acting, dancing, touring, or just being in the background, it's a privilege and an honour to be teamed up with these amazing people with the biggest hearts, and the most fired up passion I've seen in a long time. And the best part is, it's all for You, God. Don't let us make it anything else.
