Diggn' the Job and the peeps

Since I started work at the City of Victoria, my skill set has be growing. I started working on Excel updating info on various street lights, and then moved on to working on a program called Tempest. I do corrections on property owner information so redundancies are gone. It is very similar to directory assistance, but no jerk-customers to deal with!

Next, I worked on using one honk'n huge scanner to transfer huge maps, who's dates ranged from the 90's waaay back to 1935! The older ones that were hand done look like pieces of art, and remind me of the old movie Metropolis...kinda art deco. I also used micro fiche scans and input them from CapturePerfect into yet another data base. From there, I used Irfanview to merge over 1600 files.

Now, I'm working on creating a whole new data base from scratch on Excel! It will have all the information of each park, ranging from park benches, doggie doo dispensers, bathrooms, different types of courts, type of fencing, play lots etc etc. This is a huge endeavor, that will be implemented into the Global Information Systems. Basically, there will be layers if information that will be placed on a map, and on each point, one can access a wealth of information. For example, if one is visiting Victoria, and they want to go to a park, they can look any one up on the map, click on it, and find out exactly where it is, if there is picnic tables, if there is a ocean view, if there are paths to hike on, benches to rest on, and bathrooms to take a leak at.

I'm very excited, and I feel that I'm actually doing something worthwhile! Another nice thing, while I was at coffee, one of my co-workers said she actually likes coming to work now, because she likes socializing with me! She felt like someone cared when I phoned her on the day she didn't show up to work, as I was concerned about her knee. I think it's good to have fun at work with your co-workers, and enjoy doing your work too.

I'm not sure how long this contract will last, but I am sure grateful that I have had the opportunity to work for the City. I've met amazing people, I've got more advanced job skills, that will look awesome on a resume, and I feel down right HAPPY, more happy than I have ever felt at any job I've done. It gives me hope that there are jobs somewhere out there that are worth while, and people who appreciate who I am, and what I can do!
