She knows how to change a tyre, she knows how to break a coconut, she knows how to pickpocket, she knows how to get Aaron to sleep. She knows many things but she doesn't know how to fix this.
She wants to go to him and say it's okay. Say that whatever he did, whatever happened, it's okay. She understands, she forgives him, and whatever he wants her to do or say, she will do it. She just wants it to be okay, she wants him to be okay.
Instead she says "So this is it?"as her final futile attempt at reaching out to him. Her voice is slightly amused, almost as if she can't believe they've come to this point, but it hides behind a mix of frustration and confusion.
He hasn't talked to her in days.
He's still sullen and withdrawn and he doesn't lift his head from the book he's reading as he replies with a tired tone. "Yeah, I guess so, Kate."
Sadness seeps through him in every action and every word but she can't understand why and he won't tell her. He's just sinking within himself, not even swallowing in self-pity, just closing in from everyone. It angers and frustrates her but she doesn't know what to do. It leaves her speechless.
They've been through a lot together and she somehow expects more from him than an indifferent shrug, but she won't push it. Their relationship has always beeh on a slippery ground - the only thing certain is it's uncertainty.
So she just follows his example and gives up, she lets go, and he doesn't even raise his eyes from his book to watch her go.
