Oh how this part is vexing me! I can't string two words together in the QAF universe right now! I open the story and instead of working on it, I play 6,395 games of Solitaire.
Here's a bit of a teaser for the next part! I'm hoping that posting it will inspire me to keep going!

TEASER for Part 8 of The One Where Justin's With Another Guy, and Brian Interferes )
Their answers of "I don't know", when they asked each other if they wanted to stay together, really "be together", don't sound like "maybe" to me. They sound more like "No, but I don't want to admit that to you yet, or even to myself." As if they both feel guilty or ashamed to admit the truth that they just don't love each other that much. And Dan's desperate attempt to "prove" he and Justin can make it together seems more like a last ditch effort to deny the facts than any kind of real possibility that it can all work out somehow.
Let's face it, we are looking at the disintegration of a relationship here. No matter how much they try to make it work or hold on, they can't make themselves feel things they don't or be okay with things that they're not. Dan will never get over the age difference and Justin is happy with where and how he's living right now. They shouldn't have to apologize for feeling that way and they shouldn't try to force themselves to be okay with a situation when they're not.
Neither wants to admit the truth because it would feel too much like saying they never really loved each other. But that's not true, they do; just not enough to turn their lives upside-down for each other. And that's okay, that's fair. Not every love is a "nothing will come between us" forever kind of love, that doesn't make it any less real or good.
But for all Dan seemed the "anti-Brian" he sure is putting Justin in exactly the same situation Brian did that caused this whole mess in the first place. Where Justin is perfectly content living his life the way he is but is expected to give all of that up and live the life he's being handed by his boyfriend just to make everything work out to his boyfriend's satisfaction. Sound familiar? Of course this is about staying together instead of spitting up but it's still all on their terms and not Justin's with the same lack of choice involved. Poor Justin!
In the end, it sounds to me like they are both holding out for some kind of guarantee that the relationship will work out and be worth the sacrifices, the effort put into it before either of them are willing to make any kind of real committment to each other. And if they're that hesitant and unsure that it's worth it to stay together, it's probably not. Love requires faith and trust and I don't see that here. Just my opinion.
