Today is the independence day (8/15) for the Republic of Korea from none other than, Japan. We went to meet my cousin, Sunghwan who was drafted into the army. Unlike in the US, South Korea has a mandatory two year military service of all males after age 18. After independence from japan, korea was split into two parts, and even now there is only a 'standstill,' no peace has endured.
