June as been an unusually wet month; we had our entire annual rainfall this month, plus in one 24 hour period we had our entire June rainfall. The last time we had weather like this was in the 1950s. As a result the garden is looking fantastic; the roses are coming on well, and the rose cuttings also look as they are going to 'take', which means I will have some to share. I had to go to K&D this week to order the new clothes line, and couldn't resist buying another 2 David Austin roses as they had been reduced in price. I have removed the packaging and have them sitting in a bucket of water until I can plant them. Our favourite thing to do each day is to walk around the front garden and check out the roses' progress.
K&D rang yesterday to say that the clothes line I ordered would take a long time to come; I'm assuming that they would have to do a production run of the parts in order to supply it, so I ordered a larger model which is available now. I'm looking forward to having it installed as it will be located adjacent to the cement path and I won't have to trudge through the mud to hang out the washing, and also the washing won't be dragging in the mud. It is also large enough to hold all the laundry I could possibly wish to do in one day.
Les went back to the lung specialist, and the conclusion is that he has a type of asthma which is activated when he walks uphill.
We have taken a break from renovations, and as yet have done nothing about finding someone to complete the kitchen. It may take some time in any case as there has been a rash of new home construction due to the federal government's 'First Home Owner's' scheme.
Last Sunday we went to Les' daughter's home to celebrate her 50th birthday. Her two older daughter's had come home from interstate for the occasion, so it was lovely to catch up with everyone. Here is a pic, taken with my new camera. I find Nikon tends towards the blue range of colours, my top is actually grey, not blue as it appears to be here. I find I am looking more and more like a stern headmistress, possibly due to lack of sleep, 3 hours not being sufficient. Perhaps I just have the face I deserve, but I liked my former one better and wish it would come back.
I was looking at Nigella Lawson's web page earlier this week. She has amusing comments on some of the recipes - Chocolate Fudge cake serves 10, or one with a broken heart, Tiramisu serves 12, but can serve 1 or 2. I wanted the recipe for Clementine cake, which I made yesterday. It is absolutely gorgeous, and the flavour reminds me of Lemon Delicious pudding. The ingredients are: 4 mandarins (boiled in water for 2 hours, allowed to cool, then chopped in the food processor), 6 eggs, 225 gm sugar, 1 heaped teaspoon baking powder, 250gm almond meal. I couldn't resist having one slice, then a second. The cake is very moist and has almost a custardy texture to it, and the top is slightly like meringue. It would make a lovely dessert for a dinner party. The recipe says it is best baked the day before serving, when perhaps the cake holds together better.
