I waited in for John on Friday, and eventually when it had reached 1pm and he had still not shown up I rang him and asked if he was coming. He confessed that he had totally forgotten about it, and would come immediately. He was here within 15 minutes and installed the oven and cooktop, but has to come back to do the power points as he was leaving for the west coast of the island to attend his brother's wedding. The kitchen looks a whole lot better with the appliances installed, and I am very happy with the performance of the cooktop, it is excellent. I'm not sure how I feel about the oven, it has electronic controls and I feel as if I almost need a degree in electronics to be able to use it. So far it has taken me 3 days to learn how to set the clock, and I need to understand how to program the oven before I can use it. Having used a basic stove all my life this seems unnecessarily complicated to me, but I want to cook so I will have to master it. The manual has been written by someone who knows what they are doing but cannot put themselves in the place of someone who does not. It has also been translated from a foreign language. Instead of numbers on the dial for the oven there are small icons - and I mean small, and they are in light grey against a black background. Even with a magnifying glass I can't read them, but then I do have a cataract at present. Fortunately the manual has larger versions of them, each representing an oven function. I have numbered them from 1 to 12, which is how they appear clockwise around the dial
Nick moved the dishwasher into the kitchen on Friday, but it is not plumbed in yet. However, when I saw it placed in the kitchen I was overcome with joy and exclaimed 'Oh, my darling, I have waited so long to embrace you!' Les following behind said 'She never talks to me like that.' The dishwasher was purchased 2 1/2 years ago, we had no idea it would take so long for the kitchen to be done.
The past 2 days Nick has been very evident, trying to get as much done as possible before he goes off to the country again. He will be gone for more than a week. The drawers have now been assembled and installed and even (shock, horror) have handles attached! Two cupboard doors have also been installed. We had another hiccup with the corner cupboards, the shelves should have been installed before the benchtop was placed in position. It was annoying to have to shell out $200 for carousel shelving which I had not planned to have, even though it does make the contents more accessible. There is sawdust right through the kitchen, even in the frig!
It is obvious that the top cupboards won't be installed for a while, but at least I can start to move some stuff back into the bottom cabinets.
It is a vast improvement to have regained some space in the livingroom, although the rangehood is still in its box in there. On Saturday I was able to set up the ironing board and do some ironing, which was good as I had run out of clothes. I ironed 6 pairs of slacks, 1 pair of shorts, and 4 tops. That was as much as the clothes airer could hold. I still have another 8 items to be done.
This is with the benchtop installed, the cabinet on the right is unfinished as there is an enclosure for the frig to be installed next to it, and they have to be screwed together.
The dishwasher, oh how I long to use it.
The cooktop and oven, and part of the drawers, there are two lots.
