The Artist's Palate

Oct 12, 2005 12:12

Worked that 18-hour shift, chatted it up with some of the night staff, and crashed in an empty room because I was too tired to drive home safely. I'd sorta expected them to kick the mattress before the morning hubbub began, but I woke up at 7:30 to emerge with pillow-hair, emerging to odd looks from some of the day staff. Oh well.
Got the oil changed in my car. It was overdue, since recent insanity at work and life has been monopolizing my time. And then, on the drive home, I caught a little cafe out of the corner of my eye. I was feeling hungry... why not stop? I had to turn around, since it's right next to I-80.

The place feels like a piece of San Francisco. Classy but laid back. Artwork on the walls, including some work by the proprietor. I was intrigued by one piece which was nothing but streaked colors, named "Desert Beach".
The owner of this 13 week-old establishment was feeding her kids in the dining room, and was awfully apologetic about it at first: were they bothering me? I waved her off and said I loved kids, so she cooked me breakfast and sat down.
I chose the Spanish Omlette. Black beans, salsa, sour cream, cheese, tomatoes and cilantro. Scrumptuous with chipped potatoes, rye toast and hot chocolate.
We chatted about the cafe, and what she's trying to do with it. About where we've been and what we've done. Vivian's a nice gal, with a vision. I takes a lot to put yourself out there, committed to sink or swim in the entreprenurial world. I understand that better than most, which is prolly why I've not done it.
Don't misinterpret that last paragraph to indicate attraction... she's an interesting [older] gal, which I had an interesting conversation with.

Finding a place like this is like... when you were a kid, and venturing into your grandparents' attic and discovering something. Good food, good service, and a wonderful atmosphere. I hope they succeed, and for my part I'll be going back. If you're in the Salt Lake area, I hope you'll try it out.
