So the Oscars, huh? Yes I know it's very late but I'm not a punctual person.
Problem? No? I didn't think so.
Anyway firstly let's start with the bomb off the evening - Martin Scorsese. You might disagree with me
but I really do think they gave him a sympathy Oscar.
Not necessarily for Best Director, but the Departed winning best film. I mean, I'm not really a huge fan. So I am a little one-sided because of my love for all low budget films (was hoping Little Miss Sunshine or The Queen would win, but hell that's me). It's not his best work, I mean, I'm sorry that the board of snobby film critics forgot to give it to him for masterpieces for like Taxi Driver and Raging Bull. I mean, alright the Departed was a great film but it seems to be leaning heavily on the fact that people think this will be the last great film Scorsese will turn out before he retires.
The other awards, best actor, so on and so forth. Now I am aware that
Leonardo Dicaprio IS the best thing since sliced bread
but I don't think he should have won. I feel sorry for him, his mouth went a little funny when Whitaker won (was it like one of those i-might-just-win heat-of-the-moment moments?) but he was a much better actor as a kid. He didn't change so drastically for his roles, true, but he did transform his acting completely. Now, he has a weird attitude thing going on. What's up with that, Dicaprio? Whatever, Forrest Whitaker is great, was great so kudos to him. (I will give it to them both for being well dressed - Leonardo Dicaprio looked beyond amazing on the red carpet.)
And oh, did I mention
Helen Mirren is also kinda-fricking-awesome? And I don't just mean her dress choice.
Sometimes I think she's a little weird but most of the time she's aight and that was a great performance in the Queen. But there were a helluvah lotta great nominees this year, with the exception of Penelope Cruz, the others always deliver kick ass performances so in my humble opinion, it was pretty stiff competition. Not to mention I love both Kate Winslet and Meryl Streep within every inch of my life.
Jennifer Hudson, take off that damn jacket!
And pockets in that dress? POCKETS?! I ask you. But yes, well done on Dreamgirls. And the Oscar. While Hudson was the only reason (and a little bit of Eddie Murphy) why I sat through the mess that was Dreamgirls, I wanted Rinko Kikuchi to win. I'm sorry, but she blew all the other goddamn nominees away with Babel. Sorry, Miss. Thing, but you know it's true!
Yay! Little Miss Sunshine! Double whammy!
I DID expect Little Miss Sunshine to win 'Best Screenplay', I mean, (adopts Peter Ishkan voice) hello? But I wasn't expecting Alan Arkin to win so that was a pleasant surprise. Felt bad for Eddie Murphy though, I think he was expecting to win. But how stupid would it be, if the only reason he didn't win was because of Norbit? Oh wait, I'm writing in my LJ, this is the Oscars. Sorry, I lost my bearings for a second.
Shout out to Peter O'Toole!
Can you believe no one has offered him a lead in the last twenty so and so years? He was fabulous in Venus. With all due respect to Forrest Whitaker, I wanted O'Toole to win.
So anyway, 'Best Adapted Screenplay' for the Departed. No surprise there, I did expect it to win even though for a weird second I thought Children of Men would win. Don't ask? But hello, why didn't Pan's Labyrinth win Best Foreign Film? Now, that was a weird moment?
Anyway, loathe I to mention fashion, but I have to hand it to Cate Blanchett for turning up in the best outfit. It was simply stunning and I love, love, love her. Anything else?
Oh yes, I was sure United 93 would win for Best Editing. But that's a little irrelevant.
Lastly, seeing George Lucas, Steven Spielsberg handing out the award, then Martin Scorsese, Clint Eastwood, etc getting nominated for Best Director made me salty. Wouldn't it be awesome if one year when all these old, male Hollywood veterans were nominated and a hot, young female director won?
And sympathy Oscars don't count of course!
