Self-help 'makes you feel worse'? Well, duh...

Here are a couple of quotes from the end of [the article] I read that I feel are probably the most useful, by way of a summary:

"...positive thinking can help when it is part of a broader programme of therapy."

"...self-esteem [is] based on a range of real life factors, and ... counselling to build confidence - rather than telling yourself things are better than they are - [is] the solution."

I've been telling friends and such this, for years, when they've asked me if they should buy self-help books or similar viral-marketed nonsense. It's about time research was visibly published reinforcing it... so this BBC news article is a start, at least.

It's just a pity that the 'Self-help industry' is a global, multi-billion pound witch's pot of brain-washing and deceit (or close enough to not be worth arguing about it); getting the people that believe they need self-help to actually realise that self-help is almost invariably bad for them, when the industry is telling them it's the one thing most likely to help, is already a trial: with this publicised research, I don't doubt that the industry will just put more effort into making their approach look shinier.

Meh.
