You have an AMD 2400+ CPU don't you? If so, it'll most likely be a Thoroughbred core and 68C shouldn't be too much of a hardship for it...
I've seen them be totally stable at a temp. of 75C over a prolonged period, so i think you'll be fine especially as you shut it down straight away. From memory, i think the safe threshold for a Thoroughbred core is 80C although i wouldn't recommend running your CPU at this heat for long.
Glad your new board arrived. :) I got a p1 in my attic that has a dead cpu fan, that I still run every now and then briefly, just to see if it still boots. :P Heck, I could prolly put the heatsink out of my old athlon 2800+ on top and it'd cool without the fan. :P
