It had been four days since Myra had gone on vacation with The Other Shadow, and she was staring down her last day away from work before she was given her next assignment. She’d just gone tea shopping and was locking her door in the dark before turning on her lights. The overhead bulb flicked on, and she blinked, slightly surprised by the mass of black that was sitting at her small kitchen table. Wordlessly, she left her purse and bags by the locked door and sat down across from him, his red girasol flashing as his hands laid on the table. It took quite a bit of discipline to refrain from offering tea.

“Report.” The Shadow spoke quietly and Myra nodded, she had been preparing for this moment since she’d returned home.

Her story told, Myra watched the piercing eyes of The Shadow closely as he absorbed and processed the seemingly impossible tale she had recounted to him. She’d kept the story of infiltrating and raiding Khan’s palace as short as possible without omitting important facts, and still it had taken the better part of two hours to recant.

“The device.” He held out his hand, and Myra stood, retrieving the PINpoint from her purse and bringing it over to him, and putting it in his hand. He turned it over, studying the foreign lines closely for a minute before setting it down in the center of the table. “Continue.” Myra paused, trying to find the best way of phrasing things that she could. This she had been given less time to consider.

“It was…considered that perhaps The Other Shadow could possibly provide insight into certain situations.” Myra felt her usually stolid confidence slowly wilting as she stared at the eyes fixated right back at her. With his scarf in place and eyes mostly shielded from the light by the hat brim, she found herself unable to gather any sort of reaction from him…as if he would react. She gave a small huff and lowered her eyes, staring at the table top. “I realize it’s a dangerous game to get an alternate involved, but others have already come here, so why not use the advantage to get ahead of our own crime? There are trying times ahead of us that I can’t begin to imagine. He can help by providing an unparalleled insight.”

“And you will be the agent to pass this information.” It was not an inquiry, but in the same vein, not a statement. The tone of his voice was even, and unwavering.

“With your permission. I’ve already been to the Nexus, and the worlds beyond it. It’s reached into our world and taken from it. I intend to maintain my connections there, if only to have sources in case something larger comes to our reality.” As she speaks, she finds herself able to look back up and meet his eyes. This is a resolution she came to on her own and her confidence in her choice on the matter shows. Carefully, the icy blue eyes narrow slightly, and Myra sits tall as she waits for his judgment on the issue. Slowly the hands lift from the table and disappear beneath the cloak falling over his shoulders as he crosses his arms, and the brim of the hat dips far enough to completely obscure his face from her.

“Maintain your contacts in the Nexus and keep me updated. Do not leave details with Burbank; I will contact you so that you may provide a full report.”

“Understood.” Myra nodded, her jaw tight as she felt a weight lifted off her shoulders, and replaced with one she was willing to bear. Myra watched as the brim of the hat lifted up, and she could see The Shadow giving the PINpoint another look before he stood up soundlessly and walked over to a window that led out to a fire escape. She kept the window loose for her own purposes, but it wouldn’t have mattered to The Shadow anyways as he lifted it and stepped out into the dark city, his form hardly noticeable even against the city lights.

Once she was certain he was gone, she let her shoulders droop and let out a relived sigh as she leaned back in her chair, lazily reaching for her PINpoint. Carefully she typed in a message and sent it.

In the sanctum and an entire world away, a similar looking device blinked on a dark desk in a black-clad room.

He agreed.
