baby, I'm bad news...

It's been a exhausting week, and it's not even halfway over. Sunday I was in one of the worst funks I've been in in quite some time. I don't really want to talk about that -- I'd like to preserve some of my dignity here.

Then last night, I thought something had happened to my parents, and started freaking. They weren't answering their main phone, my Dad wasn't answering his cell, I knew they were supposed to be at home, and I thought they knew I was calling. I waited a while and hadn't heard anything by midnight. And that's when Mom and Dad turn into pumpkins, so I knew something had to be wrong.

I tried calling a number I found online that I thought might be their friends' number. I hated calling that late, but I didn't know what else to do. Let that ring around 20 times. No answer there, either, but I knew that their friends both worked away from home a few nights a week.

Finally, I resorted to calling the local police. They promised to drive over there and knock on the door. I was actually really surprised they were willing to do that. An hour later, I hadn't heard anything still, so I called the police. Apparently they'd gone by the house, and knocked on the door, but there was no answer. I asked them how many cars were in the driveway: they were all there, so that meant that they were home and somehow not answering.

The dispatcher asked me if I wanted them to go back and "attempt to gain entry to the residence." I wasn't sure if that was the best thing to do, but I agreed because I couldn't think of anything else. I just hoped that my dad didn't decide to shoot whomever was breaking into the house. About 15 minutes later, I got a text from my Dad. I called him, and he said that the police had been there. There were about four police cars across the street, and officers were walking around the property with flashlights. My mom apparently said to my father that there was someone at the door, and he said, "You're kidding me, right?"

So, how did this happen? A) My mom was online until around 10:30, at which point my parents both decided to go to bed. B) My dad's cell phone was off from a meeting he'd had earlier that evening C) He'd unplugged the phone next to their bed while taking a nap earlier that day so that he wouldn't be disturbed by the phone ringing D) They both forgot that I was calling. When I relayed what my mom and I had agreed upon to her, she said, "Oh yeah....now I remember!" E) My parents, like me, can be incredibly heavy sleepers. Don't believe me? One morning in college, I heard a bunch of people talking about "that fire drill last night." I slept right through it. I've also slept soundly when there was a circular saw being used on a wood floor a few feet from the couch where I was resting. F) In addition to being heavy sleepers, my family is also known for needless worry and heaps of pessimism. Which explains my reaction to all of this quite nicely.

In other news...work has been difficult. Yesterday my boss announced that he wants to do the impossible and expects everyone who works for him to make this happen. Even if he approved their vacation, they should realize that their time is never really free. Yep, just another day.

And now I'm bummed because I wanted to go see Rilo Kiley tomorrow night in Philly and they're sold out. Guess that's what I get for waiting too long under the assumption that a Wednesday night show won't be that packed.

All I can say for this week is: :P

drama, family, frustration
