well it sounds to me like its in desperate need of a reformatting. soooo i suggest you take out the drive and put it in whatever computer you are using now (don't boot from it obviously, just install it as a secondary drive), copy all the files you need off of it, and then reformat. unless something really horrrible happened to the disk, there's no reason you can't reformat AND keep all your files.
also, if you think it may be a disk error as opposed to a software error (disk drives can go astray for the dumbest reasons), i would suggest purchasing a new drive so this never happens again, installing that in your comp, then hook up your old drive as a secondary drive and copy the files off that way. you can then reformat the old drive and use it for backup purposes.
you can find amazing deals for new drives on eDealInfo.. last week they had a 200gig drive which after rebates was $149 !!)(&!(*@&^! you can also find 80 gig drives for around $50. if you dont want to wait for them to be shipped, find which ones have the rebates and go to a store and purchase one.
