[The replica asssumed there would be swordplay involved. After all, he's fought Sheik's knives and Zack and Cloud with their oversized blades, Link's broadsword and keyblades, the Persian's sword, and Yuffie's oversized shuriken.

So he's not expecting empty hands, and it takes him a moment to notive that his opponent wields a weapon that looked a lot like Larxene's.
