Tress speak to me.

Ever since I was young, I felt like nature was my only family and the only place I ever felt safe. My homes were always full of anger and violence, loud voices, fists, feet that would strike. I would climb in trees, as far as I could go and wrap my arms around the trunk knowing that if it could, it would hug me back. I'd hide in the roots that were coming up out of the ground and pretend it was protecting me from the evils of the world. Bringing a blanket with me I'd curl up inside it and fall asleep.

Stars, grass, plants, flowers and other animals spoke to me. Letting me know I'm safe, letting me know they'll protect me. "It's not your fault. We love you. We care. We will protect you. It will be okay. Hold on for a little longer. You'll be away soon." And I believed them. I held their words close to my heart and would hear them echo in my mind and ears when I was afraid.
