Day 01 - Introduce yourself

Aug 22, 2010 14:34

On August 8th, I said I'd do one of these a day(ish). Well, I have half-failed at that already: clearly I have not been doing one a day.

But I'm still going to try to do them!

Day 01 -- Introduce yourself

I am Sonia.

... Really, that's it. I don't particularly like self-identifications. That leads to in-group/out-group distinctions, which leads to divisiveness and closed-mindedness. However, I have no objection to being identified by other people, so I will introduce myself using some of the descriptors others have used about me recently: "Dedicated," "motivated," "outgoing," "open mind and open heart," "a lot of hobbies," "works too hard," "never shows stress," "feminist," "weird," "kooky," "too smart." These are biased towards the positive, because that's what people are willing to say about me to my face.

I can describe myself with facts:
* I value loyalty above all else.
* The two worst feelings for me are 1) lack of autonomy and 2) the inability to protect my friends.
* I was born at the University of Chicago Hospitals. I went to the University of Chicago's affiliated schools from preschool through the end of high school.
* I attended Vassar College. I did not do a semester abroad because every semester at Vassar was too precious.
* I have had a hard summer.
* I have had a good summer.
* I live without regrets and look only to the future.
* I'm listening to my ska Pandora station.
* I can run 3.1 miles in 33 minutes. Before the beginning of this summer, I couldn't (or could barely) run 1 mile.
* I think learning is more important than grades. After having read Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance this summer and borrowing some words from Jackie, I can extend and articulate this: I value excellence over success.
* I love to create.

I am curious. How would you describe me?
