I'm going to get involved...
So I lost yet another family member to cancer. It seems a lot of people in my family die from some sort of illness usually cancer. 2 died from Alzhimers/Dementia.
Well because of this, I am getting involved with the American Cancer Society. I'm going to start volunteering and doing their walks and runs and going to their galas.
I'm also going to pull out my high school community service project and try to implement that again as well. In high school, I won an award for community service by implementing a reading/tutoring program for at-risk children and teens. It was life changing for me. I got to help so many people with my team. I didn't realize how hard it was for some of them. They were really smart just because of all the stuff going on at home (most lived in the worst neighboorhoods, were in jail a lot, etc.) and didn't feel school was going to get them anywhere. I remember one kid who was in 11th grade couldn't even read at a 5th grade level and to help him come up and feel good about himself, gives me this warm feeling inside.
Sometimes I feel my real calling is to go back to non-profit work. I used to do so much for volunteer work from planning galas to implementing my own plans.
I miss it. So as of today, I'm going to start getting involved again. I know the ACS has a Relay for Life event coming up next year and if it's not too late, I'm going to sign a team up for it. If you are interested in joining me, please let me know.
